Barak Bushlands Park Dog Off Leash Area

Barak Bushlands is a natural, unfenced off-leash reserve off Falkiner Street in Eltham, with the Diamond Creek Trail threading through native bushland. The terrain is steep, grassy and bush-covered, so this is a workout rather than a structured dog park, and the crowd is thin on any day of the week. If you want a quiet, non-commercial patch of Nillumbik bush where an active dog can actually explore, this is the pick.

The dog setup

There is no perimeter fencing here. Dogs are permitted off-leash in the designated areas under effective control, which at an open bushland reserve means constant sight lines and a recall you would bet money on. Leash up within five metres of shared paths such as the Diamond Creek Trail and in any marked on-leash zones. The reserve borders dense bush with native wildlife along the Diamond Creek corridor, so supervision is not optional.

Max: no bins, no water, unfenced bush with wildlife about. Treat this as a bring-everything walk and don't unclip until recall is proven on the day.

Worth knowing

Amenities are deliberately minimal: no rubbish bins, no water taps, no toilets and no bag dispensers, so pack your own water and waste bags and carry everything back out. The ground is a mix of steep grassy slopes and dirt tracks, worth remembering if your dog is older or recovering. This suits dogs and owners who like to move, not dogs who want a flat social lawn.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Falkiner Street and use the informal street parking. You can also walk or cycle straight onto the reserve from the Diamond Creek Trail, and Eltham Station on the Hurstbridge line is close enough to add a rail leg to your outing.

When to go

The reserve is rarely busy, and mid-week mornings can be close to solitary. After rain, expect slippery slopes and mud, so pick your day accordingly.
