Griffith Park is a natural, unfenced riverside off-leash area on Griffith Park Road, Eltham, running along the Yarra. It is open off-leash 24/7, and the draw is the quiet, bush-like setting with river access for dogs who like to swim. This is a spot for confident dogs, not a fenced enclosure.

The rules. Off-leash applies only in the designated green zones marked on the Nillumbik Council map. Because the area is unfenced, your dog must stay in sight and respond to recall. Keep the lead on within five metres of shared paths, playgrounds and barbecues, and on the approach along Griffith Park Road. Dogs are prohibited in the adjoining Parks Victoria land to protect wildlife, so know where the boundary sits.

What's there. Rubbish bins in the parking area and open riverbank access. There are no public toilets and no water fountains, so bring your own water and bowl.

Getting there. Drive in via Eltham-Yarra Glen Road, turning onto Griffith Park Road; the small car park at the end holds only about eight cars, so it is best for local visits or early mornings. Eltham Station (Hurstbridge line) is a fair walk or short drive away. The natural terrain is not wheelchair friendly.

The riverbank is open and unfenced. If your dog is new to rivers or has shaky recall, keep them leashed near the water until you know how they handle the current.

Nearby with the dogs. Central Eltham's dog-friendly cafes are a short drive, including Second Home and Third Chapter on Main Road.

When to go. Weekend mornings and late weekday afternoons draw the regulars; mid-week mornings are close to solitary. A sunny morning is the pick for a quiet swim and walk. Good for water-loving dogs with reliable recall.
