Griffith Park Dog Off Leash Area

Griffith Park is a natural, unfenced riverside off-leash area at the end of Griffith Park Road in Eltham, running along the Yarra River. It is off-leash around the clock in the designated zones, and the draw is the quiet, bush-fringed setting with direct river access for dogs that like to swim. This is a spot for confident dogs with solid recall, not a fenced enclosure.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only in the green zones marked on the Nillumbik Council map, so orient yourself when you arrive rather than assuming the whole reserve is open. Because the area is unfenced, your dog must stay in sight and respond to recall. Keep the lead on within five metres of shared paths, playgrounds and barbecues, and on the approach along Griffith Park Road. The adjoining Parks Victoria land is off limits to dogs to protect wildlife, so it pays to know where that boundary sits before you follow the track upstream.

Facilities are minimal by design: bins in the parking area, grassed spots for a picnic, a single bench, and open riverbank access. There are no public toilets and no water fountains, so bring your own water and bowl. The terrain is natural and unpaved, and not wheelchair friendly.

Max: the riverbank is open and unfenced. If your dog is new to rivers or has shaky recall, keep them leashed near the water until you know how they handle the current.

The vibe

Weekend mornings and late weekday afternoons draw the regulars, while mid-week mornings can be close to solitary. A sunny morning is the pick for a quiet swim and walk, and the Sweeneys Flats track connects upstream for walkers who want a longer loop. This is a locals' river spot rather than a busy dog park social scene.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Eltham-Yarra Glen Road and turn onto Griffith Park Road; the address is 6 Griffith Park Road, Eltham VIC 3095. The small gravel car park at the end holds only about eight cars and the access is steep and unpaved, so it is best for local visits or early mornings, and low-clearance vehicles can struggle. Eltham Station on the Hurstbridge line is a fair walk or short drive away.

Close by with the dogs

If you need a fully fenced run, the Lower Eltham Park fenced oval and Eltham North Dog Park are both close by, and the Barak Bushlands offer another bushland option. Central Eltham's dog-friendly cafes are a short drive back, including Third Chapter and Second Home on Main Road.
