Darling Gardens Off-Leash Area

The gardens. Darling Gardens on Gold Street is a mature, historic Clifton Hill park, and its off-leash zone sits in the northern triangle - wide grass framed by big old trees. It is a calm, shady spot for a social off-leash wander rather than a fenced run.

The rules. Off-leash applies only inside the marked northern triangle; the rest of the park, including the playground, is on-leash. Keep dogs out of the playground, and away from BBQ and picnic areas by the required buffer. Carry a leash at all times, keep the dog in sight and under voice control, and clean up after them - bring your own bags rather than relying on dispensers.

What is there. Water taps and bowls, public toilets a short walk away, plenty of shaded grass, rotunda seating and picnic tables, and a playground for families (dog on-leash through that zone).

Getting there. It is walkable from Clifton Hill and Westgarth stations on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines, and the Route 86 tram (Stop 31) drops you about five minutes away on Queens Parade. Free street parking rings Gold Street and the surrounding blocks. The Merri Creek Trail connects nearby for a longer loop.

Nearby with the dogs. Queens Parade and neighbouring Fitzroy North have dog-welcoming cafes with outdoor seating for a coffee stop afterwards.

When to go. Late mornings and early evenings tend to be quietest; weekend afternoons draw the biggest, most social crowd. On warm days go early and use the tree shade.
