Quest Collingwood is a serviced-apartment hotel in inner Melbourne that takes pets by prior approval, which makes it one of the more workable base camps for a city trip with the dog. Studio and apartment layouts come with kitchens and a bit of room to spread out, and the tram and the Collingwood dining strip are on the doorstep.

Pets need pre-approval before you arrive, with a maximum of two per room. A non-refundable $200 cleaning fee per stay is charged on arrival. Dogs must be house-trained, kept on a lead or otherwise contained in public areas of the property, and sleep on a designated pet bed or in a crate rather than the hotel bedding. Cats and birds are also considered, while breeds on restricted or dangerous dog lists are not accommodated. Put the pre-approval request in writing when you book so the pet-friendly allocation is locked in.

Victoria Park Fenced Dog Off Leash Area is a short walk east and gives a fully fenced run off the streets. The Main Yarra Trail takes you along the river toward the city on lead. For food, Stomping Ground Brewery and Beer Hall welcomes dogs in its beer hall.
