Sir Joseph Banks Park Fenced Dog Park

The Sir Joseph Banks Park Fenced Dog Park is a large fully fenced off-lead area inside Sir Joseph Banks Park at Botany, open around the clock. Sandy ground and established trees set the tone instead of a mown lawn, and there is real room to run, which suits high-energy dogs far better than a suburban pen.

The dog setup

A double-gated entry opens into the fenced run, with water taps at each end, bins and worm farms dedicated to dog waste, and picnic tables and benches near the enclosure for owners. The broader park adds public toilets and a playground, though the two do not mix: stay inside the fenced area rather than drifting toward the playground, and keep ball games clear of the tree line where dogs lose sight of their toys.

Worth knowing

The off-lead area runs 24/7 under Bayside Council rules, with dogs under effective voice control and supervised throughout. Leash up through the double gates on the way in and out, and remove an aggressive dog straight away rather than letting it settle.

The ground is sandy and unpaved under tree cover, so it turns dusty in dry weather and muddy after rain; a towel for the car is a sensible habit.

Max: double-gated entries mean you can unclip the lead safely without another dog bolting past you. Still worth a beat to check the gap is properly shut behind you before you let go.

Getting there

A free car park sits off Fremlin Street right beside the dog park, filling up on weekends, and bus stops on Botany Road are a short walk from the entrance. Weekday mornings before 10am and early afternoons are the quiet windows, while weekend mornings and weekday evenings from 5pm to 7pm draw the biggest crowds.

The High Street Reserve Fenced Dog Park at Mascot is the nearest alternative fenced run, Tarakan Reserve at Rosebery adds an open off-lead option, and Black Gold Cafe covers the coffee on the way home.
