Tarakan Reserve

Tarakan Reserve is a small neighbourhood green at the corner of Harcourt Parade and Primrose Avenue in Rosebery, designated by the City of Sydney as an off-leash area at all times. In a suburb that has gone from factory blocks to dense apartment living, it does steady work as the local morning run-around, though it is an open reserve rather than a fenced enclosure.

The dog setup

Off-leash is allowed around the clock under City of Sydney rules, with your dog under effective control the whole time. The important qualifier is what the reserve is not: there is no perimeter fence and the reserve fronts suburban streets, so this is a park for dogs with reliable recall. If yours is still learning, or the road noise has them keyed up, leash up and walk instead, or head to a fenced option nearby.

Amenities are basic: grass, a bench, bins and not much else. Bring your own water and bags.

Worth knowing

The reserve is compact, so think socialising and steady play rather than distance running. It sits in a quiet residential pocket a short walk from the Cannery precinct, and passing traffic is light, though school-run hours put more people and dogs on the surrounding footpaths.

Getting there and parking

Rosebery is ten minutes south of the CBD, and the reserve is easiest on foot from the surrounding streets or from Gardeners Road, where buses run. Street parking around Harcourt Parade is permit-heavy but visitor spots exist; expect a short walk at peak times. Sydney City Farm at St Peters and Wulaba Park at Waterloo are both within easy walking distance if you want to extend the outing.

Close by with the dogs

The Beaconsfield Fenced Dog Park is the closest secure enclosure if you want off-lead time without the recall gamble, and Sweetacres Park is the other Rosebery green in the directory. Two Fives Cafe on Gardeners Road does coffee with dog-friendly outdoor seating for the walk home.
