Joynton Park

Joynton Park is the Green Square district's backyard: a landscaped urban lawn at the corner of Joynton Avenue and Gadigal Avenue in Zetland, with an off-leash zone that runs around the clock. Apartment-dwelling dogs from Zetland, Waterloo and Rosebery converge here, and with a cafe set right in the park, it doubles as the area's dog-owner social club. It is not fenced though, which shapes everything about how you use it.

The dog setup

The main lawn is designated off-leash 24 hours a day under City of Sydney rules, with separate on-leash and no-dog zones around the playgrounds and planted gardens, so read the signage as you enter. Because the park is open to the surrounding streets, effective voice control is the price of admission; a dog with a loose recall can wander toward footpaths and roads. The ornamental water features are for looking at, not swimming. Bins and bag dispensers are provided but run dry on busy weekends, so carry your own bags.

Max: The lawn's open edges mean a confident recall matters more here than the off-leash hours do. Keep new or reactive dogs on a long line until you know how they handle the unfenced boundary.

The vibe

Weekdays surge around 7 to 9am and 5 to 7pm when locals fit walks around work; weekends stay steady all day. Mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday is the quiet window. Good lighting, benches, picnic tables, barbecues and public toilets make evening visits workable, and the rainforest-style planting gives the lawn some softness against the apartment towers.

Getting there and parking

Green Square Station is a short walk away on the Airport Line, and buses run along O'Dea Avenue and Gadigal Avenue. Parking is the weak point: nearby street parking is metered and competitive, so the reliable option is paid parking at East Village Shopping Centre next door.

Close by with the dogs
