Crown Park

Crown Park is a small, leafy pocket park on Crystal Street in Waterloo, and it carries a useful designation for anyone in the Green Square pocket: dogs are allowed off-leash here around the clock, every day. It is a neighbourhood stop for a run-around and a sniff rather than a destination park, which suits the apartment-dense streets around it.

The dog setup

The whole park works as an off-leash area with no hour restrictions, so early walkers and evening dog owners both get a window. City of Sydney rules still apply: the dog must stay under effective control, meaning you keep a leash with you and clip it back on if things get unruly, and dogs go back on lead on the surrounding footpaths. One person can supervise up to four dogs. The park itself is compact grass with shade trees, benches and bins, fine for a stretch of the legs but not a fetch workout for a large dog.

Worth knowing

There is no fencing, so recall matters more here than at an enclosed dog park, and dogs and prams share a small space at busy times. The children's playground within the park is off limits to dogs even on a lead. Bins are provided for waste but bring your own bags. Weekday mid-mornings and early afternoons are the quiet stretches; mornings, evenings and weekend evenings draw the locals.

Getting there and parking

The park sits at 22A Crystal Street, Waterloo, a short walk from the Green Square precinct. Street parking on Crystal Street and the surrounding residential roads is limited, as it is across most of this part of Sydney, and buses run along nearby Elizabeth and Bourke Streets if you are coming from further afield.

Close by with the dogs

If the pocket park feels too small, Joynton Park in Zetland and Southern Cross Drive Reserve in Rosebery both offer more open grass nearby, and the Beaconsfield Fenced Dog Park adds the secure option Crown Park cannot provide.
