Ward Park(Surry Hills)

Ward Park, officially Eddie Ward Park, sits on Marlborough Street in Surry Hills serving the surrounding terraces and the Northcott estate, and it runs as an off-leash area at all times. For inner-city dogs that need a quick run without a car trip, this is the neighbourhood default.

Off-lead all hours

Dogs can be off-lead around the clock under City of Sydney rules, provided they stay under effective voice control and you stay in the park with them. The exclusions matter in a park this busy: no dogs in the children's playgrounds, the skate bowl or the barbecue areas.

Carry your own waste bags and use the bins; rangers do patrol Surry Hills. This is an unfenced park, so recall needs to be real before the lead comes off near the Crown Street traffic.

The park itself

Two playgrounds, barbecue facilities, a small skate bowl, public toilets and shaded bench seating sit around a central lawn, with large gums doing most of the cover. The middle ground gets patchy and muddy after rain, but the grassier edges along the fence lines hold up better when the centre is churned.

Pepsi: twenty minutes of off-lead laps before the city wakes up, then the lead goes back on for the walk down Crown Street to the cafe.

Getting there and parking

The park is a 10 to 15 minute walk from Central Station, with buses running along Crown and Cleveland Streets. Parking is street only and mostly 2P or resident permit on Marlborough, Nickson and Crown Streets, so check the signs or leave the car at home.

When to go

Weekday afternoons from about 3:30 to 5:30 bring the after-school crowd, and weekend mornings fill early with dog regulars. Mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday is the quiet window if your dog needs space.

Close by with the dogs

Paddock on Crown has a shaded courtyard a short walk away, and Forrester's on Riley Street welcomes dogs throughout. Crystalbrook Albion is the pet-friendly stay option within walking distance, and Harmony Park is the other off-leash patch nearby.
