Harmony Park

Harmony Park, on the block bounded by Goulburn, Brisbane and Campbell Streets, is the main off-leash park in central Surry Hills: an open lawn with shade trees and a genuine local dog crowd, off-leash around the clock under City of Sydney rules. For an inner-city park, having a dedicated dog drinking fountain on site is the detail that sets it apart.

The dog setup

The main grassed area is off-leash at all times, so there is no clock-watching here. The catch is that the lawn is not fenced, so effective voice control matters and a lead stays on hand; clip up on the surrounding footpaths and keep clear of the children's play equipment. The drinking fountain and bowls, bench seating under the tree line and perimeter lighting for early or late visits round out the setup. Bring your own bags, as the on-site supply is not guaranteed.

The vibe

A true neighbourhood dog park: weekday evenings after 5pm and weekend mid-mornings fill the lawn with regulars, and early weekday afternoons are the quiet window for a reactive or nervous dog. The lawn turns boggy after heavy Sydney rain, so an old towel for paws earns its place in the bag.

Max: give the lawn a day to drain after rain, or you will be carrying half of Surry Hills home on four paws.

Getting there and parking

The park is a 5 to 10 minute walk from Central Station and the Capitol Square light rail stop. Street parking is metered and fiercely competitive, so walking, public transport or a ride-share beats driving every time.

Close by with the dogs

Crown Street's dog-friendly venues sit within a short walk, including The Clock for a post-park drink, and Ward Park on Marlborough Street is the quieter local alternative. Visiting from out of town, Crystalbrook Albion on Riley Street takes dogs.
