Frog Hollow Reserve

Frog Hollow Reserve is a small, heritage-listed park on Riley Street at the corner of Albion Street in Surry Hills, set in a sunken hollow below high brick retaining walls. It is off-leash at all times under City of Sydney rules, and the below-street, enclosed layout makes it feel far more contained than most inner-city parks, which is exactly why owners of flighty dogs seek it out.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies daily, but dogs must stay under effective voice control and you must carry a leash even while inside. Bring your own waste bags, since on-site supplies are not reliably restocked. There are no dog water bowls or bubblers either, so pack a portable bowl and water. Bench seating runs around the perimeter and mature trees give good pockets of shade in summer.

Max: the sunken walls make this a tidy spot for a dog that bolts, but they also mean a crowd has nowhere to spread out. If your dog gets overwhelmed easily, come mid-morning or mid-afternoon instead of the before-work rush.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is a short walk off Crown Street and about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Central Station, with buses along nearby Elizabeth Street. Street parking in Surry Hills is tightly timed, so read the signs carefully if you drive. Check the gate notice on arrival, as signage about the off-leash status can change.

The vibe

Weekday traffic peaks around 7:30 to 9am and again from 5 to 6:30pm when locals swing by between commutes. Weekends are steadier, with more midday picnic use from the surrounding apartment dwellers. The space is small enough that the crowd sets the mood, so a quick lap from the gate tells you whether it is the right hour for your dog.

While you're out there

For a post-walk coffee, Pieno has a leafy courtyard on Crown Street where dogs settle easily, and Forrester's on Riley Street is close by for something longer. If you want a second run in the suburb, Ward Park is an easy walk north.
