Rosebank Park

Rosebank Park on Farrell Avenue is a small, elevated pocket of lawn tucked off Darlinghurst Road near Kings Cross, and it is a designated off-leash area around the clock. For inner-city dogs this is a quick, close-to-home run rather than a destination: five minutes off the lead before work, then back to the terrace.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies 24 hours a day under City of Sydney rules, but the park is unfenced and open to the street, so effective control and solid recall are essential. Owners must pick up after their dogs, keep them from rushing other park users, and carry a lead. Facilities are minimal - a bench and a patch of grass - so bring your own water and waste bags in case none are stocked.

Max: unfenced and off-leash by the Cross means you stay switched on, but the convenience is hard to beat.

Worth knowing

This is a neighbourhood park shared with locals cutting through, so mornings and late evenings suit best; the elevated lawn dries quickly after rain, a small mercy in a dense streetscape. Because there is no fence and the street runs along the edge, it is a poor fit for dogs that bolt towards traffic or strangers.

Getting there and parking

The park sits on Farrell Avenue, a short walk from Darlinghurst Road and the Kings Cross station end of the suburb. Street parking in the surrounding lanes is tight and metered, so most people arrive on foot - which, for a park this size, is the natural approach anyway.

For a proper secure run, the Neal Macrossan Playground Park Fenced Dog Park in Paddington is the closest fenced option, and Frog Hollow Reserve in Surry Hills adds another unfenced inner-city option. Cafe NAS in Darlinghurst works for the coffee leg of the loop.
