Cook + Phillip Park

The short version. Cook + Phillip Park sits on College Street between Hyde Park and St Mary's Cathedral, and its real draw is rare for the city centre: a designated off-leash area in the middle of the Sydney CBD. If you live or work in town without a car, this is one of the few places your dog can legally run.

The rules. The grassed off-leash area is off-leash at all times, per the City of Sydney. Everywhere else - the paved paths, the area around the playground, and the pool and fitness centre - your dog must be on-leash, and dogs are not permitted inside the playground or the pool complex at all. Keep them under effective control and pick up after them; bins are provided.

What's there. Open, maintained lawn for a decent game of fetch, plenty of benches and tree shade for you, and the Yurong Water Garden as a pleasant backdrop. The Cook + Phillip Pool and fitness centre sit alongside, though dogs stay outside.

Getting there. It is a short walk from St James Station (about three minutes) or Museum Station (about five), and buses run along Elizabeth and College Streets near St Mary's Cathedral. Driving is the hard way: street parking is limited paid parking, and the pool car park means walking your dog on-leash across to the grass.

Watch-outs. This is a genuinely urban park hemmed by busy roads, William Street in particular. Fencing is partial, so a solid recall matters here more than at a fully enclosed suburban park. Keep an eye on dogs that bolt.

When to go. Mid-morning or early afternoon (roughly 1pm to 3pm on weekdays) is calmest. Before-work mornings, after-5pm, and sunny weekends draw the local resident crowd and get busy - worth avoiding if your dog is easily overwhelmed.
