Kyeemagh Off Leash Dog Area

Kyeemagh Off Leash Dog Area sits on the northern end of Kyeemagh Beach at Tancred Street, where the Cooks River meets Botany Bay, and it is one of the few spots in Sydney's south where dogs can swim and run off lead around the clock. The bay water stays calm and shallow, and planes on final approach overhead give the outing a backdrop no suburban park can match.

The dog setup

The off lead zone covers the sandy beach north of the netted swimming baths on Lady Robinsons Beach, and it is unfenced, so a reliable recall matters before you unclip. Keep your dog on lead until you are inside the zone, and leash up again before you leave.

Bayside Council requires dogs to stay under effective control at all times, to steer clear of the netted baths and nearby playgrounds, and to leave the seabirds alone. Waste bags are not always stocked on site, so carry your own supply and use the bins provided.

Pepsi: Low tide is when the wet sand flats are at their widest and even smaller dogs can wade in with confidence. High tide shrinks the beach but hands stronger swimmers deeper water.

Worth knowing

The beach is open and exposed, so natural shade is limited and the wind can build quickly. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are the quiet windows, while weekend mornings and warm evenings get busy.

The low aircraft are part of the deal here, and plenty of owners treat the plane spotting as a feature. If your dog is sound sensitive, keep that in mind before committing to a long stay.

Getting there and parking

A large car park sits directly beside the beach, about as close as parking gets without parking on the sand, and it fills early on fine weekends. Public toilets and outdoor showers sit near the beach entrance, and a water tap with a dog bowl handles the post swim rinse.

Drivers reach Tancred Street via Bestic Street or the General Holmes Drive exits. By public transport, buses along General Holmes Drive leave a short walk to the sand, with trains to Rockdale or Mascot plus a connecting bus from the city.

Close by with the dogs

The Cook Park Trail runs right past the beach if you want to stretch the outing into a longer walk. For a post swim coffee, the Brighton-Le-Sands strip to the south has dog friendly options with outdoor seating, including Billy Boy Cafe & Bistro and ExpressoMe.
