The one thing to know. Greenhills Beach is a wide ocean beach at the northern end of the Cronulla-Kurnell dune system, and its dog off-leash area runs on timed hours rather than all day. It is a big, open stretch of sand with room to run, which suits high-energy dogs, but you need to time your visit to the off-leash window.

The rules. Sutherland Shire Council sets off-leash hours of 4:00pm to 10:00am during daylight saving and 3:00pm to 10:00am the rest of the year. Outside those hours dogs are not off-leash. The designated access is at the northern end near Gate 5, and dogs must be on-leash in the surrounding Wanda Reserve dunes and walkways, including on the way in and out. Dogs must stay under effective voice control, and picking up after your dog is required. Check the signs at the gate for the current hours, as daylight-saving dates shift the afternoon start time.

The water and terrain. This is a surf beach with real swell and rips, quite different from the calm bay beaches at Silver Beach. It is a long stretch of sand backed by protected dunes. Low tide exposes a broad, firm apron of wet sand and sandbars that is ideal for running.

Watch-outs. The off-leash zone is not regularly patrolled by lifeguards, and the ocean here can be powerful, so judge the surf before letting a dog swim. The dunes behind the beach are a conservation area and revegetation zone, so keep dogs on the sand and off the vegetation. Bluebottles wash up on onshore winds.

Getting there. Take Captain Cook Drive toward Kurnell, turn into Greenhills Street and follow it to the car park at the end. Parking is free but the remote access means it can fill on fine weekends. Public transport is limited, so driving is the practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. Cook at Kurnell and the cafes along Prince Charles Parade take dogs at outdoor tables, and Cronulla, a short drive north, has more dog-friendly cafes and pet-friendly accommodation for a longer day.

When to go. Aim for the early morning window before 10:00am, or the afternoon window from 3:00 or 4:00pm depending on the season, when the beach is open to off-leash dogs. Sunrise gives the most space. Good for big runners who like room and firm sand.
