Greenhills Beach Dog Off Lead

Greenhills Beach is a wide ocean beach at the northern end of the Cronulla-Kurnell dune system, and its dog off-leash area is one of the biggest in Sydney. The catch is timing: Sutherland Shire Council runs it on timed hours rather than all day, so a visit here starts with checking the clock.

Leash status

Off-leash hours run from 4pm to 10am during daylight saving and 3pm to 10am the rest of the year. Outside those windows dogs are not permitted on this beach at all, even on a lead. Entry and exit is through Gate 5 near the northern end, and the lead stays on until you are past the surrounding Wanda Reserve dunes and walkways. Inside the zone, dogs must stay under effective voice control, you must bin all waste, and dogs declared dangerous or of restricted breeds are prohibited outright.

Pepsi: check the sign at Gate 5 before you unclip. The afternoon start time shifts between 3pm and 4pm when daylight saving flips, and rangers do time it.

Water and terrain

This is a surf beach with real swell and rips, nothing like the calm bay water at Silver Beach across the peninsula. The sand runs long and broad, backed by protected dunes, and low tide exposes a firm apron of wet sand and sandbars that is ideal for a high-energy dog to burn off steam. Judge the surf before letting your dog swim; this stretch is unpatrolled, and onshore winds wash bluebottles up in the warmer months. Keep dogs on the sand and off the dune vegetation, which is a council revegetation and conservation zone.

Getting there and parking

Take Captain Cook Drive towards Kurnell, turn into Greenhills Street and follow it to the free car park at the end, a short walk from Gate 5. The location is remote enough that the car park fills on fine weekends, and public transport is thin on the ground, so driving is the practical option. The nearest public amenities block sits at Don Lucas Reserve nearby.

Worth knowing

There are no bins guaranteeing bag supplies at the gate, so carry your own. The beach faces open ocean, so wind protection is limited on the exposed stretches, and the dune walkways are strictly on-leash territory in both directions.

When to go

Early mornings before work draw the regular local crowd and give you the calmest sea, while the 3pm or 4pm afternoon opening catches the sunset crowd. Mid-morning is off-limits entirely, which surprises first-timers who arrive at 11am with a dog expecting an open beach.

While you're out there

For a calm-water alternative, Silver Beach Dog Beach on the Botany Bay side has shallow, protected water between the groynes. Afterwards, Milkhouse in Kurnell village and Top Shop at Wanda both take dogs at outdoor tables.
