Silver Beach - Dog Beach section

The one thing to know. This is the specific off-leash section of Silver Beach at Kurnell, on the calm Botany Bay side. The council-designated zone sits between the third and fourth rock groynes at the Bonna Point end, and getting the boundary right is the whole point here, because the rest of Silver Beach is on-leash.

The rules. Sutherland Shire Council permits off-leash access at all hours, but only within the marked area between the third and fourth groynes, to the right of the Bonna Point boat ramp. Dogs must be on-leash entering and leaving that zone, on all Bonna Point Reserve paths, and anywhere else along Silver Beach. Keep your dog under effective voice control, clean up after it, and note that declared dangerous or menacing dogs are not allowed. The groyne markers are the boundary, so read the council signage on arrival.

The water. Calm, shallow bay water with minimal surf, good for a paddle rather than a swim in waves. Low tide opens up more firm sand between the groynes. Kitesurfers use the bay on windy days, so watch for lines and boards near the water.

What's there. A large free car park at Bonna Point Reserve sits directly beside the off-leash area, with bins on-site. Shade is limited on the sand, so bring shelter and water for warm days.

Getting there. Take the M5 and Captain Cook Drive to Kurnell, then follow Prince Charles Parade to the Bonna Point Reserve car park at the end. By public transport, take the train to Cronulla then the 987 bus to Kurnell.

Nearby with the dogs. The Silver Beach Cafe and Milkhouse Kurnell both welcome dogs at outdoor tables within easy reach. Cronulla, ten to fifteen minutes away, has more dog-friendly cafes and accommodation.

When to go. Weekdays and low tide are quietest and give the most room in the designated section. Weekend mornings are the busiest. Bring your own water. Good for cautious swimmers and dogs that prefer flat, shallow water.
