Kurnell Dog Beach

Kurnell Dog Beach is the local name for the dog off-leash area at the western end of Silver Beach, on the calm Botany Bay side of the Kurnell peninsula. This is a long, shallow, sheltered stretch built for steady play and nervous swimmers rather than surf, and it draws a loyal local crowd for off-lead walks with plane-spotting and kiteboarding thrown in as entertainment.

Leash status

Sutherland Shire Council designates the off-leash zone as the sand between the third and fourth rock groynes, to the right of the Bonna Point boat ramp. Within that section dogs may be off lead at all hours under effective voice control. Everywhere else along Silver Beach, and on the paths and grass of Bonna Point Reserve, leads stay on. The wildlife and migratory shorebird areas around the western sand spit are out of bounds altogether, as are restricted-breed, declared dangerous and menacing dogs. Read the signs at the entry: the groyne markers are the boundary that matters.

Water and terrain

This is Botany Bay, not the ocean, so the water is calm and shallow with little swell. Low tide exposes a wide, firm sandbank that is ideal for running and fetch, while high tide leaves a gentle shallow margin for a paddle. Kitesurfers and windsurfers work the bay when the wind is up, so keep an eye on breezy days.

Getting there and parking

Follow Captain Cook Drive to its end at Kurnell, then Prince Charles Parade along the foreshore to the Bonna Point end. Free parking lines the parade and the reserve, though it fills on sunny weekend mornings. By public transport, take the train to Cronulla and the 987 bus out to Kurnell, which stops near the foreshore. Restrooms, water bubblers with dog bowls and picnic facilities sit across the road at Bonna Point Reserve.

Worth knowing

Morning is the reliable window: the car park fills and the social scene peaks on weekend mornings, while weekday middays can be nearly empty. No surf lifesaving patrols operate here, so supervision on the water is entirely yours.

While you're out there

Both Milkhouse Kurnell and the Silver Beach Cafe, Post Office & Newsagency take dogs at outdoor tables. For a bigger run, Greenhills Beach Dog Off Lead on the ocean side is a short drive away.
