Kurnell Dog Beach

The one thing to know. Kurnell Dog Beach is the local name for the dog off-leash area at the western end of Silver Beach, on the calm Botany Bay side of the Kurnell peninsula. It is a long, shallow, sheltered stretch that suits nervous swimmers and steady play rather than surf, but the off-leash zone is a defined section, not the whole beach.

The rules. Sutherland Shire Council designates the off-leash area between the third and fourth rock groynes, to the right of the Bonna Point boat ramp. Within that zone dogs may be off-leash at all hours, provided they are under effective voice control. Everywhere else along Silver Beach, and on the paths and grass of Bonna Point Reserve, dogs must be on-leash. Restricted-breed, declared dangerous, and menacing dogs are not permitted, and you must clean up after your dog. Read the signs at the beach entry, since the groyne markers are the boundary that matters.

The water. This is Botany Bay, not the ocean, so the water is calm and shallow with little swell. Low tide opens up a wide, firm sandbank that is good for running; high tide gives a gentle shallow area for a paddle. Kitesurfers and windsurfers use the bay when the wind is up, so keep an eye out on breezy days.

Getting there. Follow Captain Cook Drive to its end at Kurnell, then Prince Charles Parade along the foreshore to the Bonna Point end. There is free parking along the parade and at the reserve, and it fills on sunny weekend mornings. By public transport, take the train to Cronulla then the 987 bus to Kurnell, which stops near the foreshore.

Nearby with the dogs. Milkhouse Kurnell and the Silver Beach Cafe both take dogs at their outdoor tables and are an easy stop before or after a walk. For a bigger off-leash run, Greenhills Beach on the ocean side is a short drive away, though it runs on timed hours.

When to go. Weekday mornings or late weekend afternoons are calmest, and low tide gives the most room to run. Bring your own water, as there is limited shade and few freshwater points on the sand. Good for social dogs and cautious swimmers who prefer flat water over waves.
