What visitors mention
Belongil Beach South is Byron's main off-leash dog beach: a 24/7, year-round zone of soft sand and calm, shallow water on the western side of town, looking back toward the Cape Byron lighthouse. It is the one stretch where a social dog can swim and run free close to the centre, which is exactly why locals use it daily.
The rules. The off-leash zone runs from a point adjacent to Manfred Street south-easterly to the western side of the Main Beach car park. North of Manfred Street the beach is dog-prohibited, so know where the line is. Dogs must stay on the wet inter-tidal sand and off the dunes and rehabilitation zones, and stay under genuine voice control even off lead. Pick up after your dog, and leash and remove any dog that turns aggressive. The boundaries can shift, so check the council signage on the day.
The water and sand. The water here is calmer and shallower than the open Main Beach, which suits social swimmers and dogs that like a paddle over a pounding. It is best at low to mid tide, when there is a wide run of firm sand. High tide squeezes the usable beach and pushes dogs up toward the dunes, which you want to avoid.
What is there. Free street parking runs along Border Street and Childe Street, with direct beach access at the end of both. Waste bags and bins are generally at the main access points. There is little else on-site, so bring your own water for the dog.
Getting there. From Ewingsdale Road, the main entry into Byron, head via Bayshore Drive and Centennial Circuit toward Border and Childe Streets for parking. It is about a 15 to 20 minute walk along the coast from Main Beach if you would rather leave the car.
Nearby with the dogs. Treehouse on Belongil sits right near the sand with dogs welcome in the garden and deck, and the town's dog-friendly cafes are a short walk or drive. Ingenia Holidays Byron Bay is the nearest pet-friendly park for an overnight base.

Aim for a midweek morning or the hour before sunset at low to mid tide; weekends, holidays and the 7 to 10am rush are the busiest. Good for social, water-loving dogs that recall well off lead.
