This off-leash strip runs south from the Brunswick Heads Surf Life Saving Club to the Tyagarah Nature Reserve boundary, and it's the calmer alternative to the surf beaches further north: no big breaks, gentler water near the river mouth, and plenty of open sand.

The rules. Off-leash only applies from about 20 metres south of the surf club down to the nature reserve boundary. Dogs must be leashed on the walk in and out of that zone, stay off the dunes, and remain under effective voice control even when off-lead. Carry a lead with you at all times and pick up after your dog.

Getting there. Paid parking is available at the South Beach Road car park, an easy walk to the access paths. The beach is also walkable from Brunswick Heads town centre. Bins are near the main access points, but bring your own waste bags as backup.

The calmer water near the river mouth makes this a good pick for dogs who like a paddle without fighting a surf break.

Go early morning or late afternoon to skip the weekend crowds, and aim for low to mid tide for the most sand to run on. There's minimal shade, so bring your own if you're staying a while.
