Brunswick Heads Main Beach Dog Exercise Area

The dog exercise area on Brunswick Heads Main Beach is a 400 metre off-leash run on the southern end of a wide, clean surf beach, starting a short distance south of the Brunswick Surf Life Saving Club and finishing at the Tyagarah Nature Reserve boundary. It is a calmer, roomier alternative to the Byron beaches, with plenty of sand for dogs of every size.

Leash status

Off-leash is allowed only within the marked zone south of the surf club, and it applies to the wet inter-tidal sand, so keep dogs off the dunes and dune rehabilitation areas entirely. Dogs must be on lead walking to and from the zone, under effective voice control while off it, with a lead carried at all times. Dogs are banned from the main beach north of the surf club, the break walls, Torakina Park and Beach, Banner Park, Terrace Park, and both the Tyagarah and Brunswick Heads Nature Reserves. Byron Shire rangers patrol regularly and fines are enforced, so read the signage at the access path.

Water and terrain

This is open surf, gentler than much of the coast here but still a real beach break rather than flat water, so it suits confident swimmers. Watch the stretch near the river mouth to the north, where currents run stronger. Low to mid tide opens the most sand for running, while a high tide can squeeze the usable strip narrow.

Pepsi: stand on the wet sand line and look south before you unclip. If the zone sign is behind you, you are in the no-dogs half of the beach.

Getting there and parking

From the M1, take the Brunswick Heads exit and follow the town streets around to South Beach Road; the car park sits at the end with a short sandy path onto the beach. It fills fast on summer weekends and school holidays, so come early. From the town centre it is an easy walk across the river footbridge and down to the southern end.

Worth knowing

Bins are at the main access points, though carrying your own waste bags is the safer bet. There is little natural shade on the open sand, so bring water and something to sit under in summer.

When to go

Early mornings are the quietest hours and the coolest for dogs, with the tide usually low enough to open the flats. Weekends through summer bring swimmers and holiday crowds to the whole beach, so shoulder season and weekday visits give you the most room.

While you're out there

The Footbridge Cafe near the river takes dogs out front for a post-swim coffee, and Drift2483 is another town stop with outdoor tables. If one beach is not enough, the New Brighton dog beach runs south to the Brunswick River's northern breakwall just up the coast, and dogs travelling through can overnight at Reflections Ferry Reserve Holiday Park.
