New Brighton Dog Beach

New Brighton Dog Beach is the local antidote to Byron's packed sand: a flat, open stretch of coastline off The Strand that runs as a 24-hour off-leash zone under Byron Shire Council rules. At low tide the inter-tidal expanse is enormous, and dogs that need a proper gallop finally get one.

Leash status

Off-leash around the clock, seven days a week, but only inside the defined zone and only on the inter-tidal strip between high and low tide. The zone runs from a point 50 metres north of the Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve boundary up to the line adjacent to Ocean Avenue. The stretch between Ocean Avenue and Gloria Street at South Golden Beach is dog-prohibited, so the northern boundary is a hard stop. Dunes and dune rehabilitation areas are off-limits at all times, dogs must stay under effective voice control from a competent person, and fines apply for waste not picked up. Check the council signage on the sand before unclipping, since signage overrides any guide.

Water and terrain

Terrain is the whole appeal: flat, hard-packed sand at low tide that narrows sharply as the tide comes in, so time your visit around the tide chart. Dogs splash in the shallows and socialise in the shallows' edge. There are no dog water facilities on the beach, so bring your own water and bowl, and carry your own bags.

Getting there and parking

Take the Brunswick Heads exit off the Pacific Highway (M1) and follow signs to New Brighton, with access via The Strand. Parking clusters near the end of The Strand and Ocean Avenue. Public transport out here is effectively nil, so driving is the only practical option.

Worth knowing

Facilities are minimal by design: no showers or shade structures at the dog zone itself, and the neighbouring nature reserves are strictly dog-free, so leashing up before you drift south matters. Shorebird nesting seasons occasionally bring tighter local compliance, another reason to read the signage on the day.

When to go

Early mornings and late afternoons are the quiet windows and pair best with low tide. Saturday and Sunday mornings draw the biggest local crowds, busy enough that shy dogs do better on a weekday.
