South Golden Beach Dog Beach

The off-leash dog beach at South Golden Beach runs north from Gloria Street along a wide, uncrowded stretch of sand towards the Billinudgel Nature Reserve. The drawcard is space: a broad beach open to dogs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and generally quieter than the Byron Bay beaches to the south.

The rules

The off-leash zone starts at Gloria Street and extends north to the southern boundary of the nature reserve. The boundaries matter: the stretch immediately south, between Ocean Avenue in New Brighton and Gloria Street, is a strict dog-prohibited zone, so keep your dog leashed until you are clearly past that line. Byron Shire Council rules also mean dogs stay in the inter-tidal zone on the wet sand, well clear of the dunes and any dune rehabilitation areas, and the adjacent Billinudgel Nature Reserve is off-limits entirely. Effective voice control is required at all times.

The water

Expect a broad sandy beach with room to move, and time your visit around the tide: low to mid tide leaves plenty of firm sand for running, while high tide compresses the usable space against the dunes. This is an unpatrolled beach, so treat the surf with respect before letting your dog swim.

Pepsi: check the swell before your dog charges in. Unpatrolled means no flags and no lifeguards, so if the surf looks heavy, keep retrieves to the shallows.

What's there

Street parking along The Strand and near Gloria Street, with direct beach access points off the road and dog waste bins at those access points. There is no freshwater shower or tap on site, so bring your own water and a bowl.

Getting there

Come off the Pacific Highway at the Yelgun interchange and follow South Golden Beach Drive to the village, roughly 20 minutes north of Byron Bay and 10 minutes from Brunswick Heads. The village shops and cafes sit a short walk from the northern access points.

Watch-outs

Rips and strong conditions are real on this coast, so mind the surf before any swimming. The prohibited stretch south towards New Brighton catches people out, so check that you are past Gloria Street before unclipping. Bluebottles after nor'easter winds are a summer hazard for keen swimmers.

When to go

Early mornings and late afternoons are the quietest and coolest, and low tide gives the widest sand. Weekdays you will often have the place nearly to yourselves; weekend mornings bring a steady stream of local dogs.
