The off-leash dog beach at South Golden Beach runs north from Gloria Street along a wide, uncrowded stretch of sand towards the Billinudgel Nature Reserve. The drawcard is simple: plenty of open space for dogs to run, backed by a relaxed local atmosphere that is generally quieter than the Byron Bay beaches to the south.
The rules. This is a 24-hour, seven-day off-leash zone, but the boundaries matter. The off-leash area starts at Gloria Street and extends north. The stretch immediately south, between Ocean Avenue in New Brighton and Gloria Street, is a strict prohibited zone, so keep your dog leashed until you are clearly past that line. Once on the sand, dogs must stay in the inter-tidal zone, the wet sand area, and well clear of the dunes and any dune rehabilitation zones. The adjacent Billinudgel Nature Reserve is off-limits entirely. Effective voice control is required at all times.
The water and terrain. Expect a broad, expansive sandy beach with room to move. Timing your visit around the tide makes a real difference: at low to mid-tide there is plenty of firm sand for running, but high tide compresses the usable space against the dunes. This is an unpatrolled beach, so treat the surf with respect and stay mindful of rips and strong conditions before letting your dog swim.

What's there. Street parking is available along The Strand and near Gloria Street, with direct beach access points off the road. Dog waste bins are provided at those access points. There is no freshwater shower on site, so bring your own water and a bowl.
Getting there. By car, come off the Pacific Highway at the Yelgun interchange and follow South Golden Beach Drive through to The Strand. Public transit is very limited, so driving is the practical option. Beachfront street parking can fill up on sunny weekends, so arrive early if the forecast is clear.
When to go. Early morning and late afternoon are the pick of the times, avoiding both the midday heat and the Sunday morning local crowd. Check the tide chart and aim for the low-to-mid-tide window for the most usable sand. Good for owners who want a spacious, no-frills beach session and dogs that thrive on open running room.
