Book it with a dog and your daily routine writes itself, sand in the morning, fenced yard at lunch, beach again at sunset.

The house is genuinely dog-friendly rather than grudgingly so. It takes generally one dog up to around 25 kilograms, and the front yard is fully fenced and grassed, framed by timber fencing, so your dog has safe off-lead space without leaving the property. An outdoor hot and cold shower handles sandy paws before anyone goes inside.

House rules keep dogs off furniture and linens, which protects you from extra fees, and the pet fee and exact conditions should be confirmed with the manager when you book. One wrinkle to know: this house appears under both the A Perfect Stay and East Coast Escapes brands, so book through whichever channel you found it on and confirm the pet terms with that manager directly.

The place

The cottage sleeps up to six, with a wraparound timber deck, a covered barbecue area and full air-conditioning. It is a family-and-friends beach house rather than a luxe villa, and the big draw is what is outside: the yard and the beach.

The beach is the whole point

The Belongil Beach South dog exercise area is right across the road, giving your dog legal off-lead time on the sand, and Belongil is the relaxed end of Byron, a 10 to 15 minute walk from the town centre along Childe Street. Check the Byron Shire Council signage for off-lead boundaries and times, as sections differ. For a coffee on the way back, Folk and The Byron Bay General Store are both dog-friendly stops on the town side.
