The Byron Bay General Store

The Byron Bay General Store occupies one of the shire's oldest commercial buildings on Bangalow Road, a short hop from the town centre, and it has become a long-standing favourite with the dog-owning crowd. The garden and outdoor tables fill with walkers and their dogs most mornings, and the kitchen's plant-forward, health-leaning menu gives it a different flavour from the polished beachfront strip.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables on a lead, and the cafe is well practised at it: water usually finds its way to regulars' dogs, and the casual garden setting gives a settled dog room to lie flat without being in the way. It is a busy spot with staff weaving through, so keep the lead short and the dog clear of the service path. Bring your own bowl as a backup. Indoors is off the table for dogs.

The vibe

Rustic and character-filled rather than slick, in a building that dates back to 1947. The acai bowls are the signature order and live up to the reputation, with sticky date waffles, macadamia porridge and haloumi plates alongside strong coffee. Doors open 7am to 2pm daily, walk-ins only, and the queue peaks hard on weekend mornings, so an early arrival is the price of a relaxed table.

Getting there and parking

The store sits at 26 Bangalow Road, Byron Bay, with free off-street and street parking nearby. Spaces get competitive in the breakfast peak, which is another argument for arriving before nine.

Pair it with

The long off-lead stretches of Belongil Beach South are a short drive away and make the ideal warm-up. Back in town, Folk Byron Bay and Leaf & Grain round out the dog-friendly breakfast circuit.
