Tallow Beach Dog Exercise Area

Tallow Beach is a long, wild stretch of open coast on the south side of Suffolk Park, and its designated off-leash zone runs 24/7. It is exposed, unfenced and often near-empty, which makes it a genuine space for dogs that need to run rather than a groomed suburban beach. The one fact that decides your visit is where the off-leash boundary sits, because the sand butts up against Arakwal National Park where dogs are banned outright.

The rules. Off-leash access applies to the beach north of the Jarman Street access point. The area south of Jarman Street and all of the adjoining Arakwal National Park are strictly no-dogs, and this is enforced. Keep to the inter-tidal zone, the firm wet sand between the water and the dunes, and stay off all dune and revegetation areas. Dogs must be on-lead on the tracks to and from the beach, and under effective control once on the sand.

The water and sand. This is an open ocean beach with real surf and frequent rips, so it suits confident, strong-swimming dogs far more than paddlers. The sand is soft and deep near the dunes and firmer along the tide line. There is little natural shade, and the beach can get hot underfoot on clear summer days.

What is there. A beach shower sits at the track entrance for rinsing off sand and salt. A small car park at the end of Jarman Street plus surrounding street parking is the main access. Bag dispensers are sometimes stocked at the access tracks, but bring your own to be safe. There are no shelters on the beach itself.

Getting there. From Byron Bay, follow Broken Head Road into Suffolk Park and turn towards Alcorn Street or Jarman Street. The Jarman Street car park is small and fills before 7am on sunny weekends, so on busy mornings park further back on the residential streets and walk in.

Watch-outs. Strong rips and shore dump are the main risk, especially for dogs that swim out. Keep well clear of the fenced dune and shorebird areas, and be aware the national park boundary is close to the southern end of the off-leash zone. On hot days, check the sand temperature before a long walk.

Nearby with the dogs. The Suffolk Park shops on Clifford Street are a short drive back, and Jimmy's Coffee is an easy footpath stop for a coffee after a beach run. Several pet-friendly rentals and motels sit within walking distance of the sand.

When to go. Sunrise is the local pick: cooler sand, calmer conditions and the car park still empty. The beach is long enough that walking north always finds quiet space even on busy days. Good for big runners and confident swimmers; less suited to small dogs or nervous paddlers given the surf.
