Yering Farm Wines

Yering Farm Wines is a family-run vineyard on St Huberts Road at Yering, pouring since 1989, and the cellar door is a converted 70-year-old hay barn with a wood-burning fire. The headline for dog owners: dogs are welcome inside the barn itself, not just on the verandah, so a proper tasting never means leaving your mate at the door.

The dog setup

Dogs on leads are welcome in the barn, on the verandah and across the outdoor seating, with a big front lawn for stretching legs between pours. You are expected to clean up after them, and the lead stays on for the whole visit. Water bowls are often provided, but bring your own if you are settling in for a picnic. You can BYO picnic food onto the lawn to make an afternoon of it, just no BYO alcohol.

Pepsi: winter is the sweet spot here, a fire, a barn full of oak smell and a warm patch of floor to curl up on.

Worth knowing

Cool-climate chardonnay and pinot noir lead the list, all grown on site, alongside the estate's own orchard apple cider, which is worth a tasting flight of its own. The Pruners Platter, loaded with local cheeses, olives and pickles, is the food order, best taken on the verandah with views across to the Yarra Ranges. Tastings run daily from 10am to 5pm, walk-ins are fine, and only groups of five or more need to book ahead.

Getting there and parking

The cellar door is at 19-21 St Huberts Road, Yering, a short drive from Yarra Glen or Coldstream, with parking on site. It sits on the valley floor near the main wine-route cluster, so it works as either the first stop or the last of the day.

Close by with the dogs

Weekday afternoons are the quiet window; weekends bring tour buses through the barn, which is worth knowing if your dog startles easily. The lawn picnic setup makes it one of the more relaxed dog outings in the Yarra Valley.
