Retarding Basin Dog Off Leash Area

This is one of Mooroolbark's retarding-basin off-leash areas, the open grassy drainage reserves that Yarra Ranges Council designates for dog exercise. It is an unfenced basin, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than escape artists.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash within the open basin but must be on-lead on surrounding paths and near any playground, and must stay under effective voice or hand control. You need to carry a lead at all times and clean up after your dog. Because the area is unfenced and bordered by streets, keep high-drive dogs close.

Good to know. Facilities are basic: open grass, perimeter paths and limited shade. There are no dedicated dog water taps, so bring your own. The ground turns muddy in winter and after rain.
