Retarding Basin Dog Off Leash Area

This is one of Mooroolbark's retarding-basin off-leash areas, the open grassy drainage reserves that Yarra Ranges Council designates for dog exercise. It is unfenced, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than escape artists.

The dog setup

Dogs may run off-leash within the open basin under Yarra Ranges Council rules, staying under effective voice or hand control at all times. On-lead is required on the surrounding paths and near any playground, and you must carry a lead and clean up after your dog.

Because the area is unfenced and bordered by streets, keep high-drive dogs close and be ready to re-clip if a council officer asks or another park user looks uncomfortable.

Worth knowing

Facilities are basic: open grass, perimeter paths and limited shade. There are no dedicated dog water taps, so bring your own, and the ground turns muddy in winter and after rain.

One point of confusion to clear before you drive: Mooroolbark has more than one retarding basin off-leash area, including the larger Balcombe/Mooroolbark Retarding Basin off Balcombe Avenue. Check the exact entrance before you set out so you do not end up at the wrong grass.

Max: unfenced basins are recall tests, not fenced playgrounds. If your dog will not come back off a scent trail, keep the lead on and use the perimeter path instead.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits within Mooroolbark's street grid with parking on the surrounding residential streets. It is a short drive from Mooroolbark station and the shopping strip, and connects towards the walking tracks around the basin network.

Close by with the dogs

Summerhill Park Dog Off Leash Area is another council-designated run nearby, and the Brushy Creek connection to the Carrum to Warburton Trail suits an on-lead leg-stretch.
