Balcombe/Mooroolbark Retarding Basin

The Balcombe/Mooroolbark Retarding Basin is a large, mostly flat grassy basin off Balcombe Avenue, ringed by trees and asphalt paths, with a central oval. It is a genuinely big open space for a run, but it is not fenced, so recall matters here.

The rules. Under Yarra Ranges Council rules, dogs can be off-leash within the open grassed basin but must be on-lead on the surrounding paths and near the playground. Your dog must stay under effective voice or hand control, and you must carry a lead at all times. The basin is bordered by residential streets, so keep high-drive dogs close.

What is there. A waste bin sits in the southwest corner, and asphalt paths loop the basin. Seating around the perimeter is unshaded, and there are no dog water taps, so bring your own water. The drainage channels collect water but are not a reliable spot for a drink.

Watch-outs. The basin gets very wet and muddy in winter and after rain. Shade is limited, so plan around the heat in summer. Standing water draws plenty of birdlife, which can be a strong distraction for dogs with high prey drive.

Getting there. There is a small parking area at 11 Balcombe Avenue plus street parking. Mooroolbark Station on the Lilydale line is about 1.5 to 2km away, with buses running along Hull and Manchester Roads.

Early mornings and late afternoons are the social peak; the middle of the day is usually quiet. For a coffee afterwards, the town-centre cafes on Brice Avenue including Manna Lane Cafe are a short drive away.
