Lillydale Lake (North West) Dog Off Leash Area

The north-west off-leash area at Lillydale Lake is the sociable corner of the lake circuit: an open grassy run of roughly 150 by 100 metres on the north side of the embankment, with Olinda Creek running along one edge for a swim. This is where most local dogs end up, so expect company on any decent-weather day.

The dog setup

The zone is unfenced and defined by council signage, not a fence line, so rock-solid recall matters. A couple of unshaded picnic tables sit inside the area, with patchy shade from mature trees, and there is no dog water tap in the zone itself, so pack a bowl. Bins are on site for clean-up, and the main toilets are over near the all-abilities playground.

Off lead applies here only. Everywhere else around the lake, the walking paths, playground, picnic and barbecue areas and the lake beach, dogs stay on lead, under effective voice control at all times. Olinda Creek along the edge is the natural swimming spot, but after heavy rain the water can carry bacteria, so give the creek and lake edge a miss for a day or two following a downpour.

Worth knowing

The creek entry points get congested at peak times, which is when nervous dogs struggle most. Early mornings and weekday middays are calmer; weekend late mornings are the busy social window.

Getting there and parking

Access is off Swansea Road, Lilydale. The main car park fills fast on weekends, so the north-east car park off the Lakeview Reserve side is the smarter drop, putting you closest to the off-leash zone. Lilydale Station on the Lilydale line is a 15 to 20 minute walk away.

While you're out there

CJ MOBILE CAFE works the main car park for a post-walk coffee with dog treats, and the Lilydale General has a fenced courtyard a short drive away. If you want a fully enclosed alternative, the Eastfield Fenced Dog Park at Croydon is a short drive south.
