What visitors mention
The north-west off-leash area at Lillydale Lake is the busy, sociable corner of the lake circuit: an open grassy run of roughly 150 by 100 metres on the north side of the embankment, with Olinda Creek along one edge for a swim. It is the spot most local dogs head for, so expect company.
The rules. Off-leash is limited to this designated north-west zone only. Everywhere else around the lake (the walking paths, the playground, the picnic and barbecue areas, the beach) is on-leash, and your dog must be under effective voice control at all times. Carry a lead and pick up after your dog; bins are on-site.
The water. Olinda Creek runs along the area and is the natural swimming spot. After heavy rain the lake water can carry bacteria, so give the creek and lake edge a miss for a day or two following a downpour.
What's there. A couple of unshaded picnic tables sit inside the zone, and mature trees give patchy shade. There is no dog water tap in the off-leash area itself, so bring your own bowl. The main toilets are over near the all-abilities playground.
Getting there. Access is off Swansea Road, Lilydale. The main car park fills fast on weekends; the north-east car park (off the Lakeview Reserve side) drops you closer to this zone. It is about a 15 to 20 minute walk from Lilydale Station on the Lilydale line.
Nearby with the dogs. CJ Mobile Cafe works the main car park for a post-walk coffee with treats for the dog, and the Lilydale General has a fenced courtyard a short drive away. Lilydale Pine Hill Caravan Park is the closest pet-friendly stay.

Weekday mornings and late afternoons are calmest. Saturday and Sunday mornings and public holidays are the busiest, and that is when timid dogs can find it overwhelming. Good for confident, social dogs who like a swim and a run.
