Grasmere Farm B&B

Grasmere Farm B&B is a 32 acre hobby farm at Gruyere in the Yarra Valley, with sunset views across the valley and a one bedroom cottage that takes dogs. It suits owners who want a quiet farm base rather than a town motel, with cellar doors and wedding venues scattered along the surrounding roads.

The dog setup

Small dogs under 10kg are welcome at Grasmere Cottage, and dogs are allowed inside, with a gated private deck to keep them secure. If your dog is bigger, the owners' second property, Grasmere Lodge, may take them instead, so raise it when you book. Any pet fee is not listed publicly, so confirm it at booking time.

On the farm itself dogs need to stay on lead, because alpacas, cows and chickens roam the property. It is a working hobby farm, so the lead rule is about livestock as much as about your dog.

Max: Keep the lead on around the farm animals. Alpacas and cows are calm, but a loose dog near livestock is asking for trouble.

The vibe

The cottage has a private entrance and a deck looking over the valley, and stays of three nights or more come with a complimentary cheese platter. Horse agistment can be arranged with notice if you are travelling with more than the dog.

Getting there

Gruyere sits in Yarra Valley wine country, roughly an hour's drive from Melbourne via the Maroondah Highway. A dog friendly wine tour operator, Pooches and Pinot, picks up guests directly from the property, which is handy for cellar door days without leaving the dog at home.

While you're out there

Two dog friendly cellar doors sit in Gruyere itself: SOUMAH of Yarra Valley and Squitchy Lane Vineyard. For a morning run before tastings, the Seville Recreational Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is a short drive east.
