Turkey Flat Vineyards

Turkey Flat Vineyards pours from a restored 1840s bluestone building that began life as the Schulz family's butcher shop, at 67 Bethany Road on the quiet edge of Tanunda. Dogs on leads are welcome across the courtyard, garden and outdoor seating, which makes this one of the easier Barossa tastings to plan around a dog.

The dog setup

Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the outdoor spaces, including the rustic courtyard, the garden and the seated areas looking over the historic vines. Water bowls are often out, but pack your own as a fallback. Resident winery dogs are around on weekdays, so if yours is reactive, pick a quieter time or keep a little distance. Keep the lead on for the whole visit.

The vibe

The estate works some of the oldest commercially yielding vines in the world, planted in 1847, and the Schulz family has farmed this ground since the 1860s. Shiraz, grenache and cabernet anchor the range, but the wine people travel for is the dry rose, long considered a standard-bearer of the modern Australian rose revival. Tastings run from 11am to 5pm daily, platter-style food is served until around 4pm, and lawn games keep families busy. Settle onto the lawn with a grazing board and an afternoon goes quickly.

Getting there and parking

Bethany Road sits a short drive from Tanunda's main street, with ample on-site parking. Small groups can generally walk in, though groups of nine or more need to book. Confirm hours before a long drive, especially on public holidays.
