Nepenthe Cellar Door

Nepenthe Cellar Door sits on Jones Road between Balhannah and Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, a cool-climate winery with sweeping vineyard views and a genuinely workable setup for dogs: the tasting happens indoors, but the deck, picnic benches and lawns are where you and your dog settle in, glass in hand, with the hills doing the rest of the work.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating and lawn areas only; the indoor tasting room building stays people-only, which is standard cellar-door practice. Keep your dog on lead through the grounds. Shade exists outside but a water bowl is not guaranteed, so bring your own, and on warm days grab a shaded table early because the deck cops long stretches of sun. Calm dogs comfortable around groups do best here; the staff are used to well-behaved dogs on the lawn.

Pepsi: The lawn is generous, the smells are excellent, and my human kept saying something about Pinot Noir. Five stars from me.

The vibe

The tasting list leans cool-climate classics: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a Gewurztraminer that regulars single out. Cheese and charcuterie platters cover the food side, and tailored tastings and wine flights are on offer from staff who know the range inside out. The cellar door runs Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm, closed Mondays. Sundays on the Hill, the regular live-music and food-truck event, brings a bigger crowd, which suits a social dog; a weekday visit is quieter and easier with a lead-trained one.

The address is 93 Jones Road, Balhannah, about 30 to 40 minutes from the Adelaide CBD by car. On-site parking sits close to the outdoor seating, so the walk in is short and lead-friendly.
