Same But Different Cafe

Same But Different is a casual cafe on Mount Barker Road in the middle of Hahndorf's historic main strip, known for loaded bagels, good coffee and a genuinely dog-first attitude. The one thing to know before you go: following a council hygiene ruling in May 2026, dogs are now restricted to the outdoor seating, so plan to sit out front or in the back courtyard.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the front and rear outdoor tables, weather permitting. The interior dining room is currently off-limits to pets after the council complaint, though the owner has been campaigning to bring them back inside, so it is worth checking with staff on arrival for the latest. The cafe has always provided water and puppacinos for visiting dogs, but bring a collapsible bowl as backup on busy days.

Pepsi: the bagels are the order here, and the front tables give the dog a prime view of every dog walking the main street.

The vibe

The kitchen runs all-day breakfast and lunch on local South Australian produce, with gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options and a licensed drinks list of local wine and craft beer. It sits on the busy main street, so expect foot traffic past your table. Quieter mid-week and in the mornings; weekends get crowded with the tourist crowd.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at 74 Mount Barker Road in Hahndorf, about 25 minutes from Adelaide. Street parking along the main strip fills fast on weekends and through tourist season; public car parks sit just off the street, including behind the Hahndorf Academy, a short walk away.

Close by with the dogs

The whole main street is an easy on-leash stroll, with water bowls outside many shops. For an off-leash run, the Mt Barker 'Barka Park' Fenced Dog Park is a short drive, and Grounds For Coffee in Mount Barker is another dog-welcoming breakfast stop. In town, Hamdorf Cafe rounds out the strip.
