Mt Barker 'Barka Park' Fenced Dog Park

Barka Park is a fully fenced off-leash dog park at 29 Zanker Drive in the Bluestone Estate, Mount Barker, run by the Mount Barker District Council. The pitch is security: separate enclosures for big and small dogs, double-gated entries and dedicated dog water fountains, which makes it a rare Adelaide Hills option for a nervous or reactive dog that still needs a proper run.

Leash status

Off-leash applies strictly inside the fenced enclosures, with owners staying in the park and supervising the whole visit. Bag dispensers and bins are on site and pickups are immediate. Any dog showing aggression or over-the-top reactivity comes out straight away, and if your dog is small or easily intimidated, use the dedicated small-dog enclosure rather than hoping for the best.

The dog setup

Inside the fence there are secure double-gated entries, dog drinking fountains, two picnic shelters with bench seating, basic agility equipment and accessible pathways. Trees give shade around the edges, though it thins out in the middle of a hot Hills afternoon. The ground is the one caveat: it turns to mud and gets churned up after rain, and busy days make it worse.

Max: give it a day to dry out after rain. Muddy ground plus a full park is the worst combination here.

Getting there and parking

The main entrance and dedicated car park sit off Zanker Drive, with pedestrian access also from Bluestone Drive. It is an easy drive from central Mount Barker, though public transport is limited, so most visits are by car. The park is open around the clock.

When to go

Weekday mid-morning and mid-afternoon are the quiet windows and the best slots for a shy dog. Early mornings, late afternoons and Saturday mornings are the busy social sessions. Check the council's Barka Park page before a first visit in case rules have been updated.
