Balhannah Dog Park

Balhannah Dog Park is a fenced, community-run off-leash area on River St, tucked along a shaded stretch of the Onkaparinga River in the Adelaide Hills. The drawcard is the creek itself, dogs can wade and swim while owners loop the gravel path under mature English oaks.

The rules. The park is fully fenced, so dogs can run off-leash, but owners still need reliable recall since the creek and open lawns mean plenty of distractions. Waste bags and bins are supplied on site, and as with any shared off-leash area, keep an eye on your dog's body language around others.

What's there. A gravelled walking track rings the perimeter, with open grassy run space in the middle. Benches are dotted along the trail, mature trees give solid shade most of the day, and the entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible.

The water. A flowing section of the Onkaparinga River runs through the park, giving dogs a natural spot to swim and cool off, a rarer feature among Adelaide Hills dog parks.

Getting there. The park is on River St, Balhannah, with free street parking right alongside it. It's a car-only destination, just off the main Adelaide Hills routes.

When to go. Sunday mornings and afternoons, plus Saturday mornings, are the busiest. Weekday evenings and Monday to Thursday nights are quiet, so aim for those if you want the creek and lawns to yourselves. Good for water-loving dogs and confident recall.
