Balhannah Dog Park

Balhannah Dog Park is a fenced, community-run off-leash area on River St in the Adelaide Hills, set along a shaded stretch of the Onkaparinga River. The creek is the whole point: dogs wade and swim while owners loop the gravel path under mature English oaks, and the park has built a reputation as a socialising spot for local dogs.

The dog setup

The reserve is fully fenced, so dogs can run free once inside, but the creek and open lawns mean plenty of distractions and recall needs to be reliable. A gravelled walking track rings the perimeter with open grassy run space in the middle, and benches sit along the trail.

The loop is short, roughly 650 m, so most visits turn into repeat circuits punctuated by swim stops. It is an easy surface for humans as well, which makes it work for older owners alongside older dogs.

Waste bags and bins are supplied on site. Watch your dog's body language around others, particularly at the popular swimming spots where dogs funnel in and out of the water.

Max: the river access is what makes this park different from every flat suburban enclosure. Bring a towel, because a Hills dog that finds moving water does not stay dry.

The vibe

This is a natural setting rather than a built park, and that is its appeal and its catch: there is no formal shelter and no permanent water fountain, so bring your own drinking water. Shade from the oaks covers most of the day, and the entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible.

Worth knowing

Snakes live in this kind of riverside grass in the warmer months, so keep dogs out of long growth at the edges from spring through autumn. Street parking on River St is limited, so park considerately for the residents.

Olive Branch Cafe on Main Street does coffee with outdoor seating and baked dog treats. Wine makes an easy pairing too: Nepenthe Cellar Door is just up the road and welcomes dogs.
