Hamdorf Cafe

Hamdorf Cafe at 91A Mount Barker Road is South Australia's first guinea pig cafe, built around an indoor miniature guinea pig village and run in partnership with the disability provider AHH Lifeskills to create employment pathways for NDIS participants. For dog owners it is an unusual proposition: the coffee and cabinet food are easy with a dog at the pavement tables, but the main attraction is indoors and off limits to pets.

The dog setup

Dogs are limited to the outdoor pavement seating out front, on lead. With live guinea pigs in the interaction zone inside, no pet dogs go anywhere near that area, for the small animals' welfare and your dog's own composure. Accredited assistance dogs are the exception. Bring your own water bowl. If your dog has a strong prey drive, this is not the stop for it; a calmer dog settling at an outdoor table is fine.

Worth knowing

The guinea pig village charges $5 per person to enter, with cushions to sit the animals on your lap, and it is the reason most visitors come. The cafe side runs on specialty coffee, cabinet treats, pies and rotating hot lunch specials, with playful touches like banh mi guinea rolls and a kids menu. The cafe itself opens from 9am daily, to 3pm on weekdays and 4pm on weekends.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking runs along Mount Barker Road and the side streets, with council car parks close by. The main street itself is flat and easy for an on-lead walk between stops.

Hahndorf's main street is one of the more dog-welcoming strips in the Adelaide Hills: The Haus Restaurant brings out water bowls on its deck, and Hahndorf Inn takes dogs across its outdoor seating. Same But Different Cafe is another cafe option nearby. For a proper off-lead run, Barka Park in Mount Barker has separate fenced big and small dog yards about ten minutes east.
