Hamdorf Cafe at 91A Mount Barker Road is South Australia's first guinea pig cafe, built around an interactive guinea pig village and run in partnership with a local disability service. It is an unusual one for dog owners: dogs are welcome, but only at the outdoor tables, and for good reason.

The dog setup. Dogs are restricted to the outdoor seating on the pavement out front. Because the cafe has free-roaming guinea pigs in the interaction zone inside, dogs cannot go anywhere near that area, both for the small animals' safety and to keep your dog calm. Accredited assistance dogs are permitted, but all other pets stay outdoors. Bring your own water bowl.

Max's takegerman shepherd
there are live guinea pigs inside this one, so keep a firm hold of the lead and settle at an outdoor table well clear of the door. A prey-driven dog is better walked somewhere else.

Good to know. The draw is the guinea pig village, where guests can hold the animals, alongside specialty coffee and a pun-filled menu. It is wheelchair accessible. The guinea pig experience is the reason most people come, but that is an indoor activity your dog cannot share.

Getting there. Free street parking runs along Mount Barker Road and nearby side streets, plus free parking lots close by.

Nearby with the dogs. The main street is very dog-friendly for an on-leash walk, several nearby cafes have dog-friendly outdoor seating, and the Hahndorf Academy grounds and local trails are good for a walk.

Best if one of your group wants the guinea pig experience while the other stays outside with the dog. Otherwise the outdoor coffee stop is the main offer here.
