The Haus Restaurant

The Haus sits at 38A Main Street in central Hahndorf, open daily from 8am until late, and for dog owners it is one of the easiest sit-down choices in the Adelaide Hills. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace and footpath seating, the staff are genuinely set up for them, and the kitchen covers everything from breakfast through to dinner.

The dog setup

Dogs go on the terrace and footpath tables, not inside. The terrace is a real outdoor room rather than a token row of chairs: heaters run through the cooler Hills months, so a shoulder-season lunch is still comfortable, and staff routinely bring out water bowls without being asked. Mention the dog when booking so you are seated outside. It is a busy venue, especially on weekends when live music is on, so a dog that settles under a table is the right fit.

On the plate

The menu leans German without stopping there. The Taste of Bavaria platter is the signature, a sharing feast of crispy pork knuckle, bratwurst, kransky, sauerkraut and mash, with a free-range pork Vienna schnitzel and wood-fired pizzas alongside. Drinks run to imported German tap beers such as Weihenstephaner, Adelaide Hills wines and gin and beer paddles. Happy hour runs Monday to Friday from 4pm to 6pm.

Getting there and parking

Hahndorf is 20 to 25 minutes up the freeway from the Adelaide CBD. There is off-street parking plus street parking along the main strip, and the flat, paved footpaths make the walk in easy with a dog. The heritage street itself is an on-leash wander past timber-framed buildings worth doing before or after the meal.
