The route follows the Brisbane River the whole way, so navigation is simple and the grade stays gentle throughout, making it a solid option for dogs that need distance without hills.

The walk starts at the Teneriffe riverfront near the ferry terminal and heads west along the Submariners Walk Heritage Trail, a stretch dotted with old wharf relics and river views. From there the path threads past New Farm Park before opening onto the wharves precinct, where outdoor dining decks and river bars mark the finish.

The rules: Brisbane City Council manages this path, and dogs must stay on a leash at all times, both along the riverwalk and within the outdoor areas of Howard Smith Wharves. The path is heavily used by cyclists and e-scooters, so keep dogs close on a short lead and to one side rather than roaming across the full width.

Water and rest stops are frequent. Bubblers appear along Submariners Walk and the New Farm Riverwalk, and Wilson Outlook Reserve offers a decent patch of grass to stretch out on. Toilets are available within the Howard Smith Wharves precinct, near the lift on Bowen Terrace, and in New Farm Park itself.

Hazards: shade is minimal along most of the route, and the concrete path can get scorching in summer. Check it with your hand before asking a dog to walk on it, and carry water on hot days. Near the river wall, keep leads short, the current can run strong and the edge isn't fenced the whole way.

Getting there: begin at the Teneriffe Ferry terminal and walk the river path west. The F1 CityCat also runs to the Howard Smith Wharves terminal if you'd rather do the walk one way, and bus 199 services Brunswick Street nearby. Paid parking is available at Howard Smith Wharves (5 Boundary St) or on-street at Wilson Outlook Reserve on Bowen Terrace.

Nearby with the dogs: extend the walk further along New Farm Riverwalk, or link up with Powerhouse Park to Newstead Gardens for a longer loop. Refuel afterwards at The Woolshed or book a dog-friendly table at Zero Fox.

When to go: aim for early morning or late afternoon, especially in summer, when the concrete is cooler and the path is quieter. This route suits confident, well-leashed dogs that are comfortable around bikes and crowds.
