Teneriffe to Howard Smith Wharves

Teneriffe to Howard Smith Wharves is a flat, paved riverside stroll in inner Brisbane, running about 1.6 km one way from the Teneriffe riverfront to the wharves precinct under the Story Bridge. It follows the Brisbane River the whole way, so navigation is impossible to get wrong, and the finish line is a precinct of outdoor dining decks and river bars.

The walk

Start near the Teneriffe ferry terminal and follow the river path west along the Submariners Walk Heritage Trail, a stretch dotted with old wharf relics. From there the path threads past the New Farm riverfront before opening onto Howard Smith Wharves. At about twenty to twenty five minutes each way on a fully paved shared path, it suits dogs who need a gentle outing rather than a distance test.

Leash status

On lead the entire way, along the riverwalk, the New Farm parklands and the Howard Smith Wharves precinct. Several outdoor venues at the wharves allow well-behaved dogs in their open-air seating, which is the payoff for the on-lead rule. The path carries cyclists, runners and e-scooters at pace, so keep your dog close on a short lead and to one side.

Max: the shared path gets busy on weekends, so a firm heel command helps when cyclists come through at speed.

Water

Bubblers appear along Submariners Walk and the riverwalk, and New Farm Park has toilets and grass for a rest. Carry water on hot days regardless, because there is little shade along most of the route and the concrete heats up hard in summer. Near the river wall, keep the lead short, since the current runs strong and the edge is not fenced the whole way.

Getting there

Begin at the Teneriffe ferry terminal and walk the river path west. The CityCat also runs to the Howard Smith Wharves terminal if you would rather do it one way, and bus 199 services Brunswick Street nearby. Paid parking sits at Howard Smith Wharves on Boundary Street, with on-street parking at Wilson Outlook Reserve on Bowen Terrace.

Close by with the dogs

Extend the walk along the New Farm Riverwalk or link the Powerhouse Park to Newstead Gardens stretch for a longer loop. The Waterfront Dog Park at Newstead is the nearby off-lead option. Refuel at The Woolshed in Teneriffe or book a dog-friendly table at Zero Fox at the wharves.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon, especially in summer when the concrete is cooler and the path is quieter. Weekends get busy with pedestrians and cyclists. The route suits confident, well-leashed dogs comfortable around bikes and crowds.
