Powerhouse Park to Newstead Gardens is a riverside stretch in New Farm, Brisbane, running from Brisbane Powerhouse along the New Farm-Teneriffe Riverwalk to Newstead. The deciding fact: Powerhouse Park has a fully fenced 1-hectare off-leash area with separate sections for large and small or shy dogs, but every other path on this route is on-lead only.

The walk. About 7.2 km, moderate grade, taking 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace on flat, paved path the whole way, suiting pups of any age or fitness level. The route follows the Cutters Landing Boardwalk section of the Riverwalk, with open river views for most of the distance.

The rules. Brisbane City Council manages this corridor. Inside the fenced off-leash area at Powerhouse Park, dogs can run free, with shade, seating, an agility course and water taps on site. Step outside that fence line, including New Farm Park, Newstead Park and the connecting riverwalk paths, and leads go back on. Keep control of your dog at all times since the off-leash zone gets busy on weekends, and clean up immediately, bins and bags are provided and on-the-spot fines apply for not picking up.

Check which section of the off-leash area you enter first if your dog is nervous around bigger breeds. The small and shy dog section is separate and gives you an easy retreat if things get too rowdy near the large-dog side.

Water. Water taps for dogs sit inside the fenced Powerhouse Park area, useful for topping up bowls. The river runs alongside much of the path, but access points along the boardwalk are limited, so this is more a scenery walk than a swim spot.

If your dog loves water, save the energy for the off-leash park's taps rather than chasing river access along the boardwalk. It is easier and safer than scrambling down the bank.

Getting there. The park sits at 137 Sydney Street, New Farm. Street parking is on Lamington Street, or use the Brisbane Powerhouse car park. Dogs are welcome on Council ferries and CityCats, and New Farm Park Ferry Terminal is a short walk from the start.

Nearby with the dogs. Continue on to the New Farm Riverwalk, or head further into Newstead for more off-leash time at Hoblers Bridge Reserve Fenced Dog Park or the Waterfront Dog Park. Refuel afterwards at Clove Cafe.

When to go. Go early on weekend mornings to beat the crowds in the off-leash area, or aim for a weekday walk if your dog prefers a quieter path. Good for seniors and dogs of any fitness level, thanks to the flat, paved surface throughout.
