Port Melbourne and Albert Park Loop

The Port Melbourne and Albert Park Loop is a 13.2 km circuit that stitches together three of Melbourne's best dog-walking strips: the Sandridge Rail Trail, Port Melbourne Beach and the Bay Trail, then a lap of Albert Park Lake on the way back. It starts near Clarendon St by the Yarra River on the South Wharf and South Melbourne boundary and runs as a loop, so you finish where you started with no shuttle needed.

The walk

Rated moderate, mostly on account of the distance rather than terrain, this takes most walkers 2.5 to 3 hours. The surface is flat and sealed the whole way, a mix of shared-use rail trail, beach promenade and lakeside path, so it suits most fitness levels and is fine for prams and older dogs, just long for small legs.

Leash status

Albert Park is managed by Parks Victoria and is on-lead on paths and grassed areas around the lake, with two designated off-lead zones: one north near Albert Road, and one west of Aughtie Drive around the sports fields, off-lead only when not in use for organised sport. Dogs cannot enter the lake itself or playgrounds, and you must carry a lead even inside the off-lead zones. On the beach, City of Port Phillip allows dogs on the sand between the yacht club and Station Pier area and Lagoon Pier from 1 April to 31 October; from 1 November to 31 March dogs are there only between 7.30pm and 10am, and cannot be on that sand outside those hours at all, leashed or not. Perce White Reserve in Port Melbourne is a year-round no-dog zone, so route around it.

Max: Check the calendar before you go in late summer. Albert Park closes the lake path for the Australian Grand Prix roughly 23 February to 15 March, and shuts to unaccredited visitors entirely from 3 to 9 March.

Water and facilities

There are water stations along the Albert Park lake path, and the Port Melbourne foreshore has taps and bubblers near the promenade. Shade alternates between open bay exposure and the treed edges of the park, so hats and water for both ends of the lead matter on warmer days. Public toilets cluster at Station Pier, the beach end and around the lake.

Getting there and parking

Parking at Albert Park Lake is paid under Parks Victoria, and street parking in South Melbourne is limited to 2P and 3P zones. By tram, the 96 runs near Albert Park and the 109 heads down Bay St toward the beach; buses 235, 237 and 606 also service Port Melbourne and Fishermans Bend.

When to go

Cooler mornings suit the full 13.2 km best, and outside Grand Prix season the whole loop runs uninterrupted. Good for seniors and steady walkers after a long, flat outing rather than a technical hike.

Make a day of it

The Port Melbourne Dog Beach sits mid loop for the sand stop, and the Albert Park Lake walk works as a shorter standalone lap if 13 km is too much.
