Balmoral Beach to The Spit

Balmoral Beach to The Spit is a 7.6 km one-way harbour walk in Mosman, linking two well-known spots through residential streets, foreshore paths and a few bush sections. AllTrails grades it moderate and it takes an hour and 45 minutes to two hours. The deciding fact for dog owners is that the sand at Balmoral itself is off limits, so this is a lead walk along the path and the grass, not a beach romp.

Leash status

Mosman Municipal Council manages this land and its policy is specific. Dogs are prohibited on Balmoral Oval and on the sand and swimming enclosures at Balmoral Beach and Chinamans Beach. They are permitted on lead on the grassed Balmoral Foreshore Reserve areas and on the foreshore path heading toward The Spit. Keep the dog under effective control the whole way and carry bags, because bins thin out once you leave the main parks and rangers do monitor these paths.

The walk

The route runs one way from The Esplanade at Balmoral Beach to The Spit Reserve on Spit Road, over mixed terrain: quiet residential footpaths, sealed foreshore path and a bush track, with sandy stretches near Wyargine Reserve that only clear at low tide. Check tide times before setting out, because those low sections can be impassable at high tide and there is no dramatic shortcut around them.

Pepsi: Stick to the grass and the path, not the sand. The Balmoral Beach ban is easy to forget once you can see the water, so keep the lead on until you are clearly on foreshore reserve or path.

Water and stops

Some council areas along the route have water and dog-bag stations, but they are not consistent for the whole walk, so carry your own supply. Public toilets sit near Bathers Pavilion and around the Balmoral wharf, useful stops near the start. At the finish, the reserves around The Spit make a proper reward: Spit East Reserve allows off-lead exercise at all times, and Spit West Reserve is off lead except on Saturdays between 8:30am and 2:30pm. Check the signage on the day, since the two ends of the reserve have different rules.

Getting there and parking

Pay and display parking is available at both ends, at Balmoral Beach and at The Spit, so you can start from either side. Buses also serve the area, which is handy for a one-way walk where you need to get back to the start. Driving to one end and bussing back is the standard trick.

Close by with the dogs

The Boathouse Balmoral Beach sits right at the start for a coffee before you set off. For proper off-lead time, the Mosman Off Leash Dog Area is the dedicated run, and Hotel Mosman works for a drink afterwards.

When to go

Aim for a low-tide window so the sandy sections near Wyargine Reserve are passable, and go earlier in the day to beat the heat on the exposed foreshore stretches. This suits dogs comfortable on lead for a long stretch rather than off-lead beach runners, and the mix of pavement and bush track means boots-or-paws should be sound.
