Clontarf Dog beach

Clontarf Dog Beach at Sandy Bay is a dedicated off-leash area on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour, at the end of Sandy Bay Road in Clontarf, NSW. The single defining feature is the calm, shallow harbour water - no surf, no rips, just clear flat swimming that suits dogs of all confidence levels.

The rules. Sandy Bay itself is off-leash 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with dogs permitted off-leash above the Mean High Water Mark. The neighbouring Clontarf Reserve operates on a different schedule: off-leash on weekdays outside school holidays, and restricted to before 10am and after 6pm (or after 8pm during daylight savings) on weekends and public holidays. Dogs are prohibited on the main Clontarf Beach sand, inside the netted tidal pool, and within 10 metres of the playground. A maximum of four dogs per person applies, and dogs must be under effective control at all times.

The water. This is harbour swimming at its most accessible. The water is shallow and clear, with a gentle gradient that lets wading dogs find their depth without a sudden drop-off. There is no heavy surf to contend with, making it a strong venue for younger or less confident swimmers. The beach is unfenced and opens directly to the harbour, so recall needs to be reliable.

Getting there. Bus routes 141 and 142 run along Manly Road, with a short walk down to the waterfront. Parking is extremely limited at the best of times and near-impossible on weekends - arrive before 8am if you want a spot on a Saturday or Sunday.

What's there. Facilities are deliberately minimal. There is limited seating, a few bins, and tap water, but do not expect shaded shelters or dedicated wash-down stations. Bring your own fresh water and a towel. For a post-walk coffee, L'Americano Espresso Bar in Balgowlah is a short drive away, as is Gusto on the Green. If you want to vary the off-leash terrain, the Mosman Off Leash Dog Area is also within easy reach.

When to go. Early weekday mornings are the sweet spot - calm water, easy parking, and far fewer people sharing the narrow strip of sand. Avoid weekend afternoons in summer, when the tide is high and space above the Mean High Water Mark shrinks to almost nothing.
