Clontarf Dog beach

Clontarf Dog Beach at Sandy Bay is a dedicated off-leash stretch on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour at the end of Sandy Bay Road, Clontarf. The defining feature is the water: calm, shallow and clear, with no surf and no rips, which makes it one of the most forgiving harbour swims for dogs of any confidence level.

Leash status

Sandy Bay itself is off-leash around the clock, seven days a week, with dogs permitted off lead above the Mean High Water Mark under Northern Beaches Council rules. The neighbouring Clontarf Reserve runs on a different schedule: off-leash on weekdays outside school holidays, and restricted to before 10am and after 6pm on weekends and public holidays, or after 8pm during daylight saving. Dogs are prohibited on the main Clontarf Beach sand, inside the netted tidal pool and within 10 metres of the playground. A maximum of four dogs per person applies, and dogs must be under effective control at all times.

Max: the bay is calm but wide open to the harbour. If yours chases boats or seabirds, keep a long line on until the recall is proven.

Water and terrain

This is harbour swimming at its most accessible. The water is shallow with a gentle gradient, so wading dogs can find their depth without a sudden drop-off, and there is no surf to fight. The beach is unfenced and opens directly to the harbour, so recall needs to be reliable before you unclip, particularly with kayakers and ferries moving through the middle harbour.

Getting there and parking

Buses 141 and 142 run along Manly Road with a short walk down to the waterfront. Parking is extremely limited at the best of times and close to impossible on weekends, so arrive before 8am if you want a spot on a Saturday or Sunday.

Worth knowing

Facilities are deliberately minimal: a little seating, a few bins and tap water, but no real shade shelter, so bring your own cover and fresh water on warm days. Clontarf Reserve next door has the playground, picnic tables and cafe strip, with the leash rules above applying across its grass.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the quiet window, with flat water and few boats. Weekend mornings build quickly once the reserve fills, so early starts win, especially in summer when the tidal pool and playground draw family crowds from mid-morning.

While you're out there

The LM Graham Reserve fenced dog park at Fairlight is a short drive back towards the Spit, and the Mosman off-leash dog area covers the harbour's other side. For a coffee on the way home, L'Americano Espresso Bar in Balgowlah is a few minutes up the road.
