L'Americano Espresso Bar

L'Americano Espresso Bar sits at the front of the Coco Republic building in Balgowlah, and the espresso bar-and-showroom pairing is exactly what makes it work for dog owners: there is outdoor seating at street level where dogs are welcome, and the design precinct around it makes the wait for a flat white feel like part of the trip.

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating areas and that is where they should stay: the indoor dining room and the furniture showroom next door are no-go zones. Local dog walkers use it as a regular stop between the northern beaches' harbour-side parks, and staff are accommodating, though on busy mornings it pays to carry your own water bowl rather than wait for one to appear.

The vibe and the menu

The fitout is stylish and the soundtrack leans jazz, which fits the furniture-store setting. The kitchen goes beyond the usual counter fare: gnocchi and chorizo salad get mentions, as do the pain perdu and scones. Hours run 7am to 3pm weekdays and 8am to 3pm on weekends, so it is a breakfast-and-lunch venue rather than an afternoon one.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is in the Coco Republic precinct off Hayes Street, near the Woolworths end of Balgowlah, with parking in the surrounding streets and the centre's own areas. It is an easy detour from Condamine Street or the Sydney Road strip, and a natural stop on a driving loop toward Manly or the Spit.

Close by with the dogs

For a proper walk first, the Manly to Spit Bridge coastal walk starts nearby and passes through harbour bushland. LM Graham Reserve in Fairlight gives you a fenced run a short drive north, and Locals Corner in Seaforth is another pet-friendly strip cafe if you are making a morning of it.
