Hoo Hoo Hut, Trevallyn Nature Reserve

Hoo Hoo Hut sits inside the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area on Launceston's western edge, near the South Esk River and Trevallyn Dam. The recently rebuilt day-use shelter marks the starting point for bushwalking tracks with river gorge lookouts, and it is one of the most popular dog-walking bases in the region.

The walk. A bitumen track runs through the day-use area, suitable for varied mobility and prams. From there, signed bushwalking tracks branch out towards the river gorge and its lookouts. Distances vary depending on which trails you link together, so check the on-site signage to plan a route that suits your dog's fitness and your own.

Leash status. Dogs are permitted in the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area, including around Hoo Hoo Hut and Trevallyn Dam. Management works through specific mapped zones set by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service: some areas require dogs on a lead, while others allow off-lead exercise. Facilities and water. The hut area has a shelter, wood-fired barbecues (bring your own firewood and check local fire rules first), picnic tables and accessible toilets. Hazards. Trevallyn Dam manages river levels through controlled releases. Walking tracks sit above the gorge and are generally safe, but keep your dog away from the waterline if you hear sirens or notice the river rising quickly after a release.

Getting there. Drive from Launceston city centre via Reatta Road and Trevallyn Road, or come through the Trevallyn suburb, following signs to Trevallyn Dam. There is a dedicated day-use car park. No public transport runs directly to the reserve, though taxis and rideshare cover the few minutes from the city. Day use only: no camping or overnight parking. Clean up all dog waste.

Weekday mornings are the quietest window, with plenty of parking and minimal trail traffic. Weekends and public holidays get busy, especially in summer. Arrive before 10am on a warm weekend to secure a park and let your dog settle into the tracks before the crowds build.
