Hoo Hoo Hut, Trevallyn Nature Reserve

Hoo Hoo Hut sits inside the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area on Launceston's western edge, a ten-minute drive from the CBD, near the South Esk River and Trevallyn Dam. The rebuilt day-use shelter marks the starting point for a network of bushwalking and mountain-biking tracks through dry eucalypt forest, and it is one of the most popular dog-walking bases around Launceston.

The walk

A bitumen track runs through the day-use area, suitable for prams and varied mobility, and from there signed bushwalking tracks branch out towards the river gorge, its lookouts and Trevallyn Dam. Options range from easy one-hour loops to longer routes that wind down towards the Duck Reach track over the South Esk. Distances vary with the trails you link, so check the on-site signage and pick a circuit that suits your dog's fitness.

Leash status

Dogs are permitted through the recreation area, including around Hoo Hoo Hut and the dam. The rules work through mapped zones set by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service: some areas are on-lead only and others allow off-lead exercise, and the zone maps posted on in-park signage are the authoritative source. Screenshot the PWS dog-zone map before you go; phone coverage can be patchy down in the gorge, and the signs are worth double-checking on arrival.

Water and facilities

The hut area has a shelter with picnic tables, barbecues and toilets nearby, with the D.T. Doyle shelter right alongside and an open grassy field next to it for spreading out. Bring your own firewood if you plan to use the barbecues and check the fire rules first. The river offers a paddle along some lower tracks, but carry drinking water for the dog regardless, since access depends on which trail you take.

Max: keep an eye on the river if you head down towards the gorge, releases from Trevallyn Dam can lift the water level quickly.

Hazards and when to go

The dam manages river levels through controlled releases; the walking tracks sit safely above the gorge, but keep your dog away from the waterline if you hear sirens or the river starts rising after a release. The reserve is open around the clock and weekends bring mountain bikers to the shared trails, so early mornings are best for a calm walk with a dog that is unsure about bikes.

Getting there and parking

Follow Reatta Road and Trevallyn Road from the city centre, or come through the Trevallyn suburb following signs towards Trevallyn Dam; the day-use area sits off Duck Reach Road with a dedicated car park. No public transport runs to the reserve, so a car, taxi or rideshare is the way in.
