Tremal Reserve

Tremal Reserve is a neighbourhood off-leash dog park in West Launceston, roughly 2.8 km from the CBD. Its defining feature is a natural, bush-like setting that draws daily commuter dog walkers. It is quieter and less formal than central city parks, which is exactly the point. You come here for open space and a scrubby, relaxed run rather than manicured lawns.

The rules. Many locals treat Tremal as a standard off-leash exercise area, but always check on-site signage before unclipping, as council rules can change. Dogs must stay out of any zones marked for significant vegetation regeneration, and they are strictly prohibited within 10 metres of playground equipment. Effective voice and sight control is required at all times, even in the open running areas. Bring your own waste bags and use the provided bins on site.

What is there. Expect basic seating near the entrance and along the main pathways. Street parking is typically available close to the reserve entrance on Wellington Street. There are no public toilets directly on site, so plan around that. Water fountains are not consistently available, so bring a full bottle and a collapsible bowl for your dog.

Getting there. The primary access point is off Wellington Street in West Launceston, with footpaths connecting through the surrounding residential streets. Direct bus access to the immediate reserve area is limited, so driving, walking in, or catching a taxi or ride-share is your most practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. If you want a coffee before or after a run, head down to Rupert & Hound or Tidal Café in central Launceston. For a fully fenced off-leash alternative, Coronation Park Fenced Dog Park in South Launceston is a solid backup if you need secure boundaries.

When to go. Weekday mornings between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, plus late afternoons from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, are peak commuter times and can get busy. Weekend mornings also see heavy traffic. For a quiet, peaceful run, target weekdays around midday between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Note that the natural surface turns muddy after rain, so keep towels in the car.
