Prospect Vale Dog Park

Prospect Vale Dog Park on Pitcher Parade is one of greater Launceston's most-used off-leash parks, run by Meander Valley Council and built around two fully fenced enclosures plus agility obstacles for dogs that want more than a lap of an oval. It is a social park, and the security of the fencing is the main draw.

The dog setup

Dogs can run off-lead inside the fenced enclosures as long as they answer to voice control, and the two separate fenced areas help split play styles. Step outside the fencing, including onto Pitcher Parade itself and the surrounding paths, and it is lead on.

Bring the dog vaccinated and comfortable meeting others, because the enclosures fill with regulars quickly, and clean up after your dog using the bins and bag dispensers on site.

What is there

Two secured fenced areas, agility obstacles, shaded seating shelters for owners, a water station, and wheelchair-friendly paths throughout. A dedicated on-lead walking trail runs alongside the park if you want to extend the outing, and free poop bags are stocked most days, though carrying spares is wise.

Pepsi: the agility gear is the difference maker. Fifteen minutes over the obstacles wears out a dog that a half hour of flat running will not.

Getting there and parking

The park sits off Pitcher Parade, easiest reached via Westbury Road or the Country Club Avenue intersection, with free street parking alongside. Weekend mornings are the busy window, and a weekday lunchtime visit is the quiet option. Bus routes service Prospect Vale generally, but expect a short walk in from the main road.

The ground turns muddy after rain, especially just outside the fenced sections, so old shoes are worth it through a Tasmanian winter.

Close by with the dogs

The Chris Street Fenced Dog Park is the same suburb's other fenced option, and Hadspen Fenced Dog Park is a short drive east. For coffee afterwards, Frankly Bagels at Prospect and M&B Cafe and Smoothie Bar in Launceston both handle dogs at the outdoor tables.
