Goat Walk

The walk. Goat Walk is the steep loop track at Bells Rapids Park on Cathedral Avenue, Brigadoon, above the Swan River. It is a roughly 3.3 km loop that takes about an hour, with loose gravel and a solid climb that gets the heart rate up, and it pays off with wide views over the Swan Valley toward the Perth skyline.

Leash status. Dogs are welcome but must stay on lead. The rule gets enforced because the trail shares space with wildlife and other walkers, and off-lead dogs on the steep, loose sections are a real hazard to everyone.

Water. There is river access at points along the walk and dogs can get a paddle in below the rapids, but flow depends on the season. Expect a lower, slower river over summer and autumn and a much stronger flow after winter rain, when footing near the water gets more dangerous. Bring your own water and bowl regardless, since there is no reliable tap on the trail.

Hazards. The surface is steep and loose underfoot in sections, not stroller or wheelchair friendly, and slippery when wet. Good grip shoes matter more than usual here.

Getting there. Bells Rapids Park is on Cathedral Avenue, Brigadoon, about 45 minutes from the Perth CBD by car. There is gravel parking at the base near the rapids, and picnic areas by the riverbank, but no other facilities to speak of. Public transport does not really reach here, so driving is the only practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. The Swan Valley is five to ten minutes away and has several dog-friendly options for afterwards, including winery restaurants such as Sittella and RiverBank Estate, plus pet-friendly cottages if you are staying over. Confirm current outdoor dog policies before you arrive, as these can change seasonally.

When to go. Weekdays are noticeably quieter; weekends get busy, especially mornings. If you are after the river at its most dramatic, go after winter rain, but keep dogs well back from the edge. Good for confident walkers with sure-footed dogs rather than small or nervous ones.
