Macquarie Woods Forestry Reserve Campground

Macquarie Woods Forestry Reserve Campground is a free, dog-friendly bush camp inside Vittoria State Forest, about 30 minutes west of Bathurst and 20 minutes east of Orange. It is a 600-hectare mix of pine plantation and native woodland with informal, unallocated camp sites, and it is a genuinely popular free camp for tents, campervans and self-contained caravans.

Pet policy. Dogs are permitted to camp overnight in the free camping areas within the recreation area, in line with typical NSW State Forest rules. Keep dogs under control at all times, and given the kangaroo population on site, a leash or long lead is the safer option, especially at dawn and dusk. There is no fee for dogs or for camping here.

The place. Facilities are basic bush-camp standard: drop toilets, picnic tables and fire pits (check current fire ban status before lighting one), shaded sites among the pines and native bush, walking tracks through the forest and around the lake, and even a disc golf course. There is no drinking water on site, the available water is non-potable and should be boiled if used at all, so bring everything you need. The ground can turn soft and boggy after rain, worth factoring in if you are towing a caravan.

Location and nearby. The campground sits on Macquarie Woods Drive, Vittoria NSW, off roads that are generally fine for 2WD vehicles, though some forest roads are unsealed and can get muddy when wet. There is ample space for vehicles and caravans. For a day out beyond the forest, Bathurst's King's Parade and Machattie Park are dog-friendly green spaces, Mount Panorama allows dogs in the car and on-leash around the surrounding area, and Lake Carcoar near Blayney is a solid pet-friendly walking option.

Who it suits. Free campers and caravanners after an off-grid stay with their dog will find this ideal, particularly anyone comfortable with drop toilets and no reticulated water. It is less suited to campers wanting powered sites or hot showers.

Before you book. No bookings are needed since sites are free and unallocated, but bring all your own drinking water, tick and flea protection for the forest environment, and a lead for managing your dog around wildlife. Check the Forestry Corporation website for current fire restrictions before you head out.
