Sea Shanties

Sea Shanties is a cluster of seven self-contained cabins under old pine trees right on the water at Amity Point, on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah). It is one of the few Queensland stays that lets dogs inside the cabin rather than parking them outside, and the waterfront setting means dolphin sightings and koalas in the canopy are part of the everyday view.

The pet policy. Dogs are welcome in four of the seven cabins (Cabins 4, 5, 6 and 7) for a $10 per night pet fee. Dogs must be kept on a leash anywhere on the property, are not allowed on the furniture or beds inside, and must never be left unattended in the cabin. Fees and exact conditions are worth confirming directly with the property when you book, as policies can shift.

The place. The grounds have a large, shaded grassed area and a communal outdoor kitchen and barbecue area where guests tend to gather. Bring your own bowls, bedding and treats. The cabins themselves are simple and self-contained rather than luxury, which suits the relaxed, low-key character of the island.

Location and nearby. Getting to North Stradbroke Island means taking the vehicle ferry from Cleveland to Dunwich (about 45 minutes), then driving roughly 15 minutes north to Amity Point. Free on-site parking is provided. With the dogs, Flinders Beach and Main Beach are close by for on-leash walking and off-leash beach time, and the North Gorge Walk at Point Lookout allows leashed dogs, though the boardwalk can get hot on your dog's paws in summer. Brown Lake and Blue Lake are national park areas and off-limits to dogs.

Who it suits. Owners after a quiet, low-key island break with a dog who is happy inside the cabin at night and content with beach walks by day, rather than off-leash runs on-site.

When to go. Book the dog-friendly cabins well ahead, they are a small subset of the property and demand is high over school holidays and long weekends. Shoulder season (autumn, spring) brings cooler boardwalks at the Gorge and quieter ferries.
