Sea Shanties

Sea Shanties is a cluster of seven self-contained cabins under old pines right on the water at Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), and it is one of the few stays in Queensland where dogs sleep inside the cabin with you rather than outside in the car. Dolphins cruise past the point and koalas sit in the canopy overhead.

The pet policy

Well-behaved dogs stay in four of the seven cabins (cabins 4, 5, 6 and 7) for a $10 per night pet fee. Dogs must be on leash anywhere on the property, are not allowed on furniture or beds, and can never be left unattended in the cabin.

Conditions can shift, so confirm the current policy and fee with the property when you book. Bring your own bowls, bedding and treats; the cabins are simple and self-contained rather than luxury, which suits the island's low-key character.

The vibe

The grounds have a large shaded lawn and a communal camp kitchen with barbecues where guests gather in the evenings, and sunset over the water is the nightly event. It is the kind of place people return to, with the waterfront outlook doing most of the entertaining.

Getting there and parking

Take the vehicle ferry from Cleveland to Dunwich, about 45 minutes across, then drive roughly 15 minutes north to Amity Point. Free on-site parking is provided. The cabins sit at 9A Cook Street, a short walk from the Amity Point jetty.

Max: Flinders Beach is on-leash along its length, and dogs are banned outright between Geera Street and the Amity Point access. Save the off-lead running for Home Beach at Point Lookout.

With the dogs on the island

The Flinders Beach Campsite offers on-leash beachfront camping further down the island, Whispering Trees at Point Lookout is another pet-friendly base, and the Minjerribah Camping grounds round out the island's dog-friendly options. The North Gorge Walk allows leashed dogs, though the boardwalk runs hot on summer paws.
