GJ Walter Park Beach Dog Off Leash Area

GJ Walter Park is a bayside park at Cleveland on Shore Street East, where a large grassed area runs straight down onto a shallow sandy beach on Moreton Bay with North Stradbroke Island across the water. The pairing of open grass and direct water access is what earns it a spot on the Redlands dog calendar.

The dog setup

A partially fenced enclosure covers the grass, with sheltered seating, shady trees, public BBQs and bag dispensers provided, plus water bowls that are not always filled, so carry your own water. The beach edge below is the swim zone, and mangroves frame the quieter end.

Worth knowing

Dogs are off lead only within the Redland City Council signed area, so read the signage at the entry before unclipping. The fencing is partial, not an enclosure sealed off from the road and pathways, which makes reliable recall the entry requirement here. Waste goes in the bins with the supplied bags.

This is a tidal bay beach, and the tide decides the visit. High tide brings clean, shallow swimming water; low tide drains everything to extensive mudflats. Check the tide chart before leaving, and rinse the dog after a salt swim.

Max: because the area is only part-fenced and open to the road, this is one to skip if your dog's recall is shaky. And check the tide, a low-tide visit is mud, not beach.

Getting there

The park sits near the Raby Bay foreshore with parking close by, and Cleveland Station is the nearest train stop followed by a short walk. Early mornings and weekends are the busy windows, and a rising or high tide on a mild day is the best swimming combination. If the mudflats are out, the same suburb keeps alternatives covered, and the harbour side of Raby Bay makes an easy on-lead cool-down stroll.
